    放射線の影響を研究するために,故アーノルド・H・スパロー博士が開発した,ムラサキツユクサの遺伝学的検出系はいまでは化学変異原の検出に利用されている。雄しべ毛での青色からピンク色への表現型変化は250 mradのような低線量のX線でも起るが, 0.14 ppmという低濃度の1, 2-dibromoethane (ガソリン添加剤)にさらされても生ずる。米国では,移動型モニタリング車が開発されて大気汚染物質の変異原性検出に有効であることが認められている。

    原子力人身事故に対する考え方はわが国と欧米の先進諸国では多少異なるが,それぞれの国で原子力開発の歴史的経過と各国の医療体制の特質により,原則的に認められている3段階体制(施設の救急所→支援病院→放射線障害専門センタ)に対し,それぞれ多少修正された対応が見られる。
    わが国では,これまで実状を考えないで放医研などへの安易な依存が強かったが, TMI事故を契機として,政府においても民間の原子力施設においても,現在鋭意緊急医療体制について検討が進められつつある。

    Dr. D. R. deBoisblanc (Ebasco), Chief Consulting Nuclear Engineer and Manager of “Molten Salt Group” in USA, was invited by Atomic Energy Society of Japan. In its Annual Meeting, March 1979, he gave a special lecture: “Progress in Molten Salt Reactor Technology Developments”. On March 29th and 30th, a special discussion meeting on MSBR was held with him. A brief review of fruitful results of these meetings is presented here, which includes the following items:
    (1) Important technical improvements made by Ebasco over the original ORNL design of MSBR, (2) Measures on Te attack of Hastelloy N, (3) Improvement of graphite technology, (4) Impurity monitor of fuel salt, (5) Development of continuous reprocessing facility, (6) Problems in the failure of the above facility, (7) Frozen wall technique, (8) Reactor control rod, (9) Emergency dump tank, (10) Drain valves, (11) Nuclear proliferation problems and DMSR, (12) Status of USA and foreign countries on R & D of MSBR, (13) Approaches to strengthen cooperative MSBR development between USA and Japan.
    MSBR has been an exclusive province of ORNL. As a result, there remains, even today, a feeling that it is a difficult technology, despite its conceptual simplicity. MSBR will probably become the most effective and beautiful breeder from the viewpoints of safety and economics.

    An experimental multi-purpose High-Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (VHTR) which is supposed to be used for a direct steel-making is now being developed in JAERI. In order to simulate the heat exchanging system between the primary helium gas and the secondary reducing gas system of VHTR, a hydrogen gas loop was constructed as a secondary cooling system of the helium gas loop. The maximum temperature and the maximum pressure of the hydrogen gas are 900°C and 42 kg/cm2·G respectively. The construction of the hydrogen gas loop was completed in January, 1977, and was successfully operated for 1, 000 h. Various performance tests, such as the hydrogen permeation test of a He/H2 heat exchanger and the thermal performance test of heat exchangers, were made. Especially, it was proved that hydrogen permeation rate through the heat exchanger was reduced to 1/301/50 by a method of calorized coating, and the coating was stable during 1, 000 h's operation. It was also stable against the temperature changes.
    This report describes the outline of the facility and performance of the components.

    Quasi-elastic neutron scattering technique has been used to investigate the time dependence of hardening process in cement pastes. A neutron spectrometer, which has sufficiently high sensitivity and good resolution, enables one to measure accurately the ratio of free water concentration to that of bound water in cement paste during hydration process. It was shown that the interpretation of the scattered neutron spectra by a two-state model, the free and the combined water, is a good approximation. It is concluded that, in the hardened paste, the positions of water molecules in the gel water should not be displaced quickly.
    The measurements have been performed by using a spectrometer which employs a pulsed cold neutron source, based upon a 35MeV electron linear accelerator with beam power of 1kW, and a crystal analyzer mirror. Performing the special efforts to attain high sensitivity, the advantage of the modest capacity accelerator as a pulsed neutron source for the scattering technique has been demonstrated.
