    Test on a control rod driving mechanism (CRDM) including a control rod (C/R) of the high temperature engineering test reactor (HTTR) has been performed to verify their reliability using the single-channel test rig of the fuel stack test section in the helium engineering demonstration loop (HENDEL) under the same operational conditions as the HTTR.
    The CRDM has been operated far more than the total driving number considered for 20 year HTTR operation. Then there has happened no situation being impossible to insert C/R into a simulated C/R channel at scrams as well as to insert or draw out C/R at normal operations. The CRDM could move C/R to any given position in the channel without error at normal operations. Overruns at scrams by disconnecting an electromagnetic clutch were short ranged 63-71mm. Pressure drop change in the channel with C/R movement was found to be so small as not to affect flow rate distribution of coolant in fuel stacks. After the test, components of the CRDM and C/R were disassembled and examined. The test results showed no failure of them.

    An expert system DISKET has been developed at JAERI to apply knowledge engineering techniques to the transient diagnosis of nuclear power plant. The first version of DISKET programmed in UTILISP has been developed with the main-frame computer FACOM M-780 at JAERI. The LISP language is not suitable for on-line diagnostic systems because it is highly dependent on computer to be used and requires a large computer memory. The large mainframe computer is also not suitable because there are various restrictions as a multi-user computer system. The second version of DISKET for a practical use has been developed in FORTRAN to realize on-1ine real time diagnoses with limited computer resources.
    These two versions of DISKET with the same knowledge base have been compared in running capability, and it has been found that the LISP version of DISKET needs more than two times of memory and CPU time of FORTRAN version. From this result, it is shown that this approach is a practical one to develop expert systems for on-line real time diagnosis of transients with limited computer resources.

    As the economical recovery of uranium from Seawater by adsorbents requires a tremendousvolume of seawater, it is necessary to evaluate the fouling of the absorbents caused by particulates and dissolved organic compounds. In this study, seawater flowed through the bed charged with a bundle of the amidoxime hollow fibers. The effect of prefiltration of seawater on uranium adsorption characteristics was clarified by varying the pore size of the pleated cartridge prefilter. The amount of particulates which adhered to the amidoxime hollow fiber was determined. The main component of fouling was iron-containing flocculates which shared 60W/O.
    Seawater prefiltered by a filter having a nominal pore size of 3μm increased the higher adsorption rate of uranium by 20%, compared to unfiltered seawater. Eighteen-day contact of unfiltered seawater with the amidoxime hollow fibers resulted in fouling of the fibers and an increase in the pressure loss. In addition, elution with hydrochloric acid could not dissolve the iron-containing flocculates completely. This was disadvantageous in the repeated use of the adsorbents.
