    Recent needs of nuclear data are found not only in the fields related to nuclear power plants but also in the other fields: medical applications, transmutation of nuclear waste, space development, non-destructive test, analysis, wide-range dosimetry, etc. To meet such wide needs, nuclear data are required for various types of incident particles and target nuclei in the wide energy range. Under these circumstances, “Research Committee on Neutron Optical Potentials” had been organized in the period from April, 1992 to March, 1994, and had investigated and discussed various problems related to neutron optical potentials which are indispensable for nuclear data evaluation. Their final report, “Present Status of Neutron Potential” was published in May, 1997. In the present report, we overview the results given in the committee.

    The purpose of the present study is to improve methane conversion for an HTGR-steam reforming system by recycling of residual methane. The residual methane in a product gas after steam reforming was recycled with a gas separator of polyimide membrane. Gas separation characteristics of the separator were investigated experimentally and numerically, and an experimental study on recycling system was carried out. The results showed that the recycling system improves apparent methane conversion, ratio of methane conversion to methane supply from a cylinder, from 20 to 32% compared with those without recycling.

    Ceramic-coated lithium particles (CCLP) are proposed for the tritium production tests in High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR). The CCLP-production method and its tritium-retention as well as -release capability are mainly studied. The CCLP consists of a lithium compound kernel coated with ceramic layers. The kernel is made from lithium compound like LiAlO2. Ceramic materials like Al2O3 are used for the coating layers.
    The present study has made clear that tritium leakage from CCLP is less than 1% after 400-days-heating at 1, 000K, and the tritium can be released completely in a short time by heating over 1, 400K. From these characteristics, it is expected that the tritium can be well extracted from the CCLP by heating over 1, 400K in the post irradiation test after irradiation under 1, 000K in the HTTR. Furthermore, a good chemical stability between the kernel and coatings was confirmed through X-ray diffraction tests after heating of their powders. The mechanical integrity of coating layers for inner gas pressure in the CCLP was evaluated to be good on the basis of material data.

    Alloying effects on the electronic structures were investigated for both b. c. c. Zr and h. c. p. Zr in order to obtain useful information for alloy design. The electronic structure was calculated using the DV-Xα cluster method, and two alloying parameters, the bond order Bo and the d-orbital energy level Md, were obtained for a variety of alloying elements M in Zr alloys. The binary phase diagrams of Zr-M system and crystallographic structure of Zr-M compound were found to be classfied according to the location in the Bo-Md map. Also it was shown that the activation energy for atomic diffusion could be associated with the bond order.
