A study has been made on the formation of UC
1-xO
x through the reaction of UC and UO
2 or UC
2 and UO
2 in several composition ratio under the pressure of CO gas of 10
-310
-4mmHg and the temperature varying in the range 1, 200°1, 750°C for 216 hr.
The main phase of the reaction product was identified to be UC
1-xO
x, where
x covered the range of 00.8 depending upon the initial composition ratio UO
2/UC or UO
2/UC
2.
The lattice parameter of the UC
1-xO
x decreased with the increase in
x and also in the reaction temperature except for the reaction at 1, 200°C, in which the parameter was obtained to be almost the same as that of UC.
The variation of the lattice parameter is understood to be due to the solubility range of U, C and O in UC
1-xO
x, which is a function of the reaction temperature.
The thermodynamical discussion was carried out about the equilibrium of UC
1-xO
x and CO gas in reference to the stability of UC
1-xO
x. The free energy of formation of UO was close to the half of that of UO
2 under our theoretical assumption. From this fact, the stable existence of pure UO may be never out of consideration.
