A water inflow into a excavated ground surrounded by diaphram walls is 3-dimensinal. Generally speaking, a 3-dimensional analysis to evaluate the water inflow requires a great deal of data set and computational time.
However, approximate 2-dimensional analyses for the evaluation was found to give insufficient solution compared with a 3-dimensional analysis.
Authors propose a new type of 2-dimensional (quasi-three dimensional) analysis usage. In this analysis, the same value as a nominal coefficient of permeability is set for the vertical section including the diaphragm wall and the aquifer underneath it. The nominal coefficient is given by an inverted analysis using the amount of the water inflow and the water heads between the outside and inside of the excavated ground which are obtained by a vertical 2-dimensional analysis.
The proposed of the 2-dimensional method gave good approximations the amount of the corresponding 3-dimensional analysis. Key words: permeability, finite element method, diaphragm wall, seepage analysis, three dimensional analysis, quasi-three dimensional analysis
