The permeable reactive barrier (PRB) which consists of biodegradable plastics and iron powder for reactants were developed and installed on Kagamigahara City, Gifu Prefecture in 2000. Nitrate concentration of groundwater permeated by the PRB has decreased from 10 mg/L to 0.1 mg/L for the first 3 years of monitoring. Groundwater quality of monitoring wells was investigated in 2008 after eight years from the installation. Concentration of nitrate-nitrogen has still maintained at the low level, and effect of PRB has continued.
