The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of clinical instructors' educational approaches and factors affecting these approaches. A self-described questionnaire survey by mail was carried out, and effective responses were obtained from 631 instructors (70.0%). Analysis of obtained responses showed the following 3 factors constituting clinical instructors' educational approaches: "provision of feedbacks", "formation of mutual relationships", and "arrangement of learning environments". These constituting concepts were supported by analysis of cases of supportive involvement described by 61 among 162 instructors with a higher educational approach score (the top 25%). The educational approach score significantly differed according to the years of experience as nurses (p<0.01), the position in the workplace (p<0.01), and the state of the participation in training seminars for clinical instructors of nursing practice (p<0.001). Concerning the image of students, there was a weak correlation between the educational approach score and the student image in terms of evaluation (r=0.273, p<0.001) but no correlation between the image in terms of abilities and the image in terms of activity. According to contents expected to be learned by students, instructors who expect them to learn "the charm and pleasure of nursing" showed a significantly high educational approach score (p<0.01), while those who expect them to learn "nursing techniques" showed a significantly low score (p<0.01). These results suggest that clinical instructors' educational approaches are affected by the occupational background, the readiness of instructions, and experience and recognition involved in motivation.
