Purpose:To identify factors related to stress reactions of parents caring for children with type 1 diabetes and to obtain suggestions on how to help such parents cope with stress.
Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered, anonymous questionnaire involving1,192 parents from 596 families caring for children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Multiple regression analysis was conducted using the total score of the psychological stress reaction measurement scale as the dependent variable, and subjects' background such as gender, the S-H resilience test, and Self-Appeal Emotion Scale as independent variables.
Results:Motherhood, shorter illness duration, low sociability, a subfactor of the S-H resilience test, and low overall self-esteem scores were associated with higher scores on the psychological stress reaction scale.
Conclusion:For effective care of children with type 1 diabetes, it is imperative to focus on motherhood and their role in the family, support them in acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge for diabetes management, encourage them to maintain social connections, and provide positive involvement to help them succeed.
