Purpose:To clarify “support provided by a public health nurse for the continuation of living alone of elderly men with dementia”.
Method:We conducted a semi-structured interview with 8 public health nurses of the Consignment-type Community Comprehensive Support Center, which has more than 5 years of practical experience. Analysis was performed using the modified grounded theory approach.
Result:24 concepts, 8 subcategories, 3 categories generated. The process by which the Community Comprehensive Support Center public health nurses support the continuation of living alone for elderly men with dementia begins with the “Get an overview from clues”. After that, you go through “watch over” such as “Cherish his way”, “touching emotions”, “appeal to the community”. Then, as in “step forward”, “Check the timing and intervene” to move toward “Stabilization of living alone”. In addition, the entire process is affected by “Improve little by little” such as “select a position” and “prepare not to notice”.
Conclusion:Public health nurses consider the characteristics of elderly men with dementia, supported them little by little, and intervened to improve the situation from a nursing perspective. The results of this study are useful for explaining and predicting the practices of public health nurses and are useful in improving the quality of their practices.
