This study was designed to see possible performance deficits of rats in eight-arm radial maze by interpolating a similar task to the original one during a retention interval. The original task was interrupted with a retention interval of 25 min between fourth and fifth choices. During the interval, an interpolating task, consisted of four forced choices on the same maze, was given. After the retention interval, rats were allowed to continue the original task, in which choice pattern of arms was examined (Test Trial). Animals showed correct performance in Test Trial when the interpolating task was given under the different light condition from the original task. On the other hand, animals showed peformance deficits when the interpolating task was under the same light condition as the original one. This finding suggests that those cues which make it possible to discriminate task situations inhibit retroactive interference caused by a similar interpolating task in rats' spatial memory.

In order to study an application of an instantaneous sampling method to lambs' play behavior, we made continuous, 24-hour, videotapes of the movements of four lambs, aged 0-4 weeks, and analyzed them. Play was defined that the behavior lacks any obvious purpose or immediate benefit. And then the play behavior was categorized into 19 unit movements. Using a continuous recording method, those unit movements were compared with the results sampled with an interval of 5-, 10-, 15-, 30-, and 60-second. The results were that only a 5-second interval method was equal to the continuous recording method. It was therefore judged that the instantanuous sampling method with an interval of over 5-second was inaccurate
