We researched the effect of a pressure relief device (PRD) of fuel cell motorcycles when a motorcycle overturns or stands upright. Numerical simulation was carried out to estimate the generated thrust and motion of the motorcycle. The results show a guideline for the exit diameter of PRD for safe discharge. Flames generated during discharging were investigated experimentally, and the flame extended 6m away from the overturned motorcycle with a 2mm exit diameter, however the motorcycle did not move. It was found that the PRD attached to a motorcycle can be activated safely if the PRD is designed properly.
