The Japan Automotive Research Institute (JARI) is advancing the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) project in Yabu City and Niyodogawa Town, which are mountainous areas facing aging and depopulation. JARI is primarily responsible for redesigning local transportation and collaborates with municipalities to form "small hubs." With support from residents, communities, and NPOs, the project aims to increase opportunities for residents to go out, revitalize the local economy, and improve well-being, while also gaining the understanding and cooperation of residents, communities, NPOs, etc. This manuscript introduces an overview of the initiatives in the two areas and the results of demonstration experiments of demand-responsive transportation and test runs of short-distance transportation using green slow mobility vehicles.
