The effect of an aircraft noise and attenuation of air traffic control towers (ATCT) on air traffic
control task was surveyed at five JASDF ATCT. Noise was recorded inside and outside the control
room, then noise level, attenuation value, speech interference level and articulation index was
analyzed. The attenuation values were compared with those obtained in 1980. Hearing thresholds
were obtained for 561 air traffic controllers from 500 to 6000 Hz and were analyzed in order to
determine hearing loss due to noise in ATCT. The results showed that mean attenuation values of the
control rooms in 1997 were lowered 2.7dB than those data in 1980. This change seemed to be due to
age degradation of the control room. In some control rooms, speech interference level and articulation
