The design of short-and medium-span highway bridges in Japan has been made according to The Specification for Highway Bridges. With regard to wind resistant design, the Specification prescribes design wind loads of bridges and dimensions of pipe structure, however, there is not a sufficient provision for wind-induced vibrations in the Specification.
The new wind resistant design manual for highway bridges has been required recently in Japan. The working group was organized in the Japan Road Association in 1984 to prepare the manual., and the draft of the Proposed Wind Resistant Design Manual For Highway Bridges was completed. The contents of the Manual are as follows:
1. general remarks
2. guideline of wind resistant design
3. wind properties used in design
4. wind-induced vibration of bridge deck
5. wind-induced vibrations of tower and bridge members
6. wind resistant design at erection stages
7. wind tunnel testing methods
In this paper described are some of the features of the Manual as well as the recent revision of the wind loading in the Specification.
