An aerobic treatment on distillery waste water from a shochn factory was examined for the purpose of comparing with the anaerobic process.
After removal of suspended solids (ss) by centrifugation the waste water, was diluted 20, 13, or 10 times with tap water respectively, to give TOC (total organic carbon) concentration of 1, 650, 2, 700 and 3, 550 mg/l and these diluted liquids were treated by the activated sludge process.
Suitable conditions for treatment of the shochu distillery waste water, as judged from the removal efficiency of TOC and sludge volume index (SVI), were seemed to be as follows: the concentration of TOC in influent ; 2, 700 mg/l, temperature of treatment ; 25-30°C, and the volumetric loading rate of TOC ; 1 g/l·d.
The yield and the decay constant of the sludge were 118% per amount of TOC consumed and O. 11 h
-1, respectively. Volume of excess sludge was calculated from both values, and excess sludges were produced at the volumetric loading rate above 0.67 g TOC/l·d, for example, O. 39 g excess sludges/l reactor volume at a volumetric loading rate of 1.0 g TOC/l·d.
