An apparatus for measuring temperature dependence of equilibrium water-vapour-pressure has been developed in order to express states of water quantitatively in hydrous silicate minerals in terms of entropy values. A series of water vapour pressures can be measured by the apparatus at various temperatures and at variable water contents of zeolites or clay minerals. The entropy values obtained can be compared with those appeared so far in several investigations by means of low temperature adiabatic calorimeter. Although most of the entropy values lie between those of liquid water and of ice, the values obtained by the present method do not show those of average zeolitic water but those of water molecule at near surface layer equilibrated directly with H2O vapour.

The hydrothermal synthesis of solid solutions between aluminosilicate and gallosilicate mordenites was performed in the system Na2O-TEA2O-Al2O3-Ga2O3-SiO2-H2O, and the continuous solid solution has been obtained though some doubt exists still as to the phases formed in the vicinity of 0.5 for the Ga2O3/(Al2O3+Ga2O3) molar fraction of gel. The Ga end-member contains alumina which came from impurity alumina present in silica source and hence its Ga2O3 molar fraction was 0.82. Similarly the solid solution formed was contaminated with the impurity alumina. The SiO2/(Al2O3+Ga2O3) molar ratios of solid solution increased with the Ga2O3 fraction of gel and the ratios are 16.9 for Al end-member and 19.8 for Ga end-member.
The solid solutions grew up to 10μm in size and changed morphologically from prismatic to platy shapes with increase of Ga contents of them. The lattice constants a, b and c of Al and Ga end-members are 18.10, 20.46 and 7.51Å, and 18.09, 20.42 and 7.50Å, respectively. Although ionic radius of Ga3+ is larger than that of Al3+, the unit cell volume of the Ga end-member is slightly smaller than that of the Al end-member. The volume contraction in the Ga rich product would be brought about by increasing of the SiO2/(Al2O3+Ga2O3) molar ratio.
A part of TEA base in the structure of the solid solution is present as cations to neutralize negative framework charge, and the remainder is supposed to exist as a neutral form.

Zeolite is, in general, very weak for electron irradiation. High temperature treatment of zeolite specimens in vacuo has been applied for high resolution electron microscopy and compositional analysis of naturally occuring zeolites.
Zeolites heated in vauco became resistible under electron beam irradiation although the degrees of stability depend on the kinds of zeolite species. By applying this treatment, HREM image of (010) stacking faults (microtwining) in dachiardite was taken for the first time. This resolved vague image of 1/2 c displacements. The vagueness was explained by a superimposition of many (100) slab images derived from frequent (100) stacking faults. Varieties of ED patterns of dachiardite could be explained based on a model of reciplocal lattice diffusing in disk form embedded parallel to b*-c* plane on the l=2n+1 levels.
Stacking faults in mordenite were also explained by the similar structural relationships. Basic examinations for compositional analysis by AEM were also carried out and key points for the analysis were discussed.

Ferrierite was found in the marginal part of a hydrothermal alteration zone around the Murakami sericite deposit. The ferrierite is associated with mordenite, opal, quartz, smectite, kaolinite K-feldspar and pyrite, and occurs usually as an idiomorphic bladed form filling an irregular veinlet. The mineral has an intermediate chemical composition in ferrierite solid solution, and its cell parameters are consistent with the composition. IR-spectrum of the ferrierite shows absorption bands at 464, 582, 635, 788, 1050, 1150 and 1220cm-1.
Magnesium leached from sericitized and albitized rocks had moved to outer hydrothermal alteration halo and precipitated as ferrierite and smectite in zeolite zone.

Alteration minerals in the hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks of the Kasasakurose Andesite distributed in the Noma Peninsula area were studied. Hydrothermally altered rocks could be divided into five altered zones by the differences in the constituent alteration products. They are unaltered zone (Zone I), smectite zone (Zone II), interstratified chlorite/smectite zone (Zone III), chlorite zone (Zone IV) and chlorite+ (sericite and/or interstratified mica/smectite) zone (Zone V).
Trioctahedral smectite in Zone II is often accompanied with mordenite, whereas interstratified mineral of chlorite/smectite is accompanied with laumontite. Smectite, interstratified chlorite/smectite and chlorite were formed from pyroxenes by hydrothermal alteration; mica minerals and calcite, on the other hand, were formed from plagioclases. Smectite was formed not only from pyroxene but also from glasses. Hydrothermal liquid was considered to be alkalic with the addition of K+and H2O and removal of Si, Al and Fe by the hydrothermal alteration.

It is found that the drying time of clay samples for X-ray powder diffraction analysis can be effectively shorten by using a commercial microwave heating apparatus. The oriented clay samples on slide glass and the samples treated with ethylene glycol can be dried by heating with the apparatus for about 3 minutes. It is also found that halloysite can be dehydrated by heating for 1 or 2 minutes.
