The rheological characteristics were investigated for the kaolinitic clay green bodies such as Kentucky-Tennessee clay, Hara-Gairome clay and Georgia kaolin by means of a capillary viscometer. The measurement of the viscosity characteristics was well carried out by the correction of the pressure drops in the capillary and between the top of the capillary and the pressure sensor. Those green bodies showed non-Bingham behavior in the water content range of 20 to 40mass%. The plasticity was well characterized with both the values of yield point and non-Newtonian coeffient of viscosity, because the former values correspond to the rigidity against the deformation due to the gravity and the latter values corresponds to the fluidity. The plasticity was evaluated from both the values. The order of the plasticity was found to be Kentucky-Tennessee clay>Hara-Gairome clay>Georgia kaolin.

To develop an effective alkali extraction of amorphous SiO2 from calcined kaolinite for preparation of mesoporous material, the effect of calcining conditions was examined. A Chinese kaolinitic clay sample was calcined at various temperature (850-1100°C) for 24hours. Each 3g of the calcined sample was suspended in 1N KOH solution (15ml) at 90 °C for 24hours, followed by washing and drying. When the samples calcined at 950 °C or more were selectively leached, mesoporous materials were obtained. The sample calcined at 1050 °C and selectively leached, showed narrow pore size distribution, and the specific surface area and total pore volume were 75.5m2/g and 0.126ml/g, respectively. The water vapor adsorption isotherm also showed steep increase at the relative vapor pressure P/P0=0.6, therefore this mesoporous sample was thought to be the candidate as humidity self-control material. Moreover, it was able to be confirmed from 29Si MAS NMR measurement that for the 950°C calcined sample the leaching of amorphous silica ended almost and remained Si existed in the mullite phase. Therefore, the calcining condition is important in making mesoporous material from kaolinitic clay by the selectively leaching processing.

Smectite and various interstratified chlorite/smectite (C/S) are widely distributed in the Miocene basic volcaniclastic sediments of the Green Tuff Formation (Aosawa basalts) in the Dewa Hill, Yamagata Prefecture. These clay minerals have been investigated by X-ray, chemical and thermal analyses as well as microscopic observation.
Transformation process from smectite to interstratified C/S is explained as follows. At first, Mg-rich smectite had been deposited from pore solution which contains dissolved substances as a result of reaction of interstitial seawater with basaltic glass. In the second stage, by increasing temperature, the smectite had transformed to randomly interstratified C/S (chlorite layer<33%), that is fine-grained and low interference colored crystal. Finally, regularly interstratified C/S (corrensite) had been produced by recrystallization.
Transition from smectite to corrensite in the Aosawa basalts is not continuous: it is characterized by discontinuous stepwise change between C/S (chlorite layer<33%) and corrensite (chlorite layer 40-50%).
