Clay mineralogical investigation was carried out on 70 core samples obtained from the pilot and service tunnels at the Honshu side of the Seikan Undersea Tunnel by means of X-ray diffraction technique, thermal analysis, and electron microscopy. Some of the core samples were observed under petrographic microscope.
The results obtained are as follows: The above core samples contain di-octahedral and tri-octahedral smectites, chlorite, interstratified mineral of chlorite/smectite, and mica clay mineral as clay minerals. Among them, di-octahedral smectite occurs most dominantly and is widely distributed in pyroclastic and sedimentary rocks, whereas tri-octahedral smectite is mainly found in basalt. The Kunnui formation of this area can be divided into two mineral zones near the location 5.8km from the portal of the pilot tunnel and near the location 5.6km from the portal of the service tunnel. One, extending from these locations to the land, is correlative with the lower part of that formation by the presence of interstratified mineral of chlorite/smectite, and the other, extending to the central part of the straits, is correlative with the upper part by the absence of that mineral. Further, based on the distribution of zeolites, it is found that the lower part of that formation is characterized by the analcime zone and the upper part by the

The measurement of exchangeable cations was carried out on smectites in core samples obtained from the pilot and service tunnels at the Honshu side of the Seikan Undersea Tunnel by means of atomic absorption spectroscopy.
The results obtained are as follows: Exchangeable cations of these smectites mainly consist of Sodium, Calcium, and Magnesium, and they can be classified into three types, i.e., (1) Sodium-Magnesium type, (2) Calcium type, and (3) Intermediate type of (1) and (2), based on the exchangeable cation compositions. Sodium-Magnesium smectites are in cation exchange equilibrium with ambient seepage waters corresponding to Present seawater, and Calcium smectites are in equilibrium with those corresponding to Calcium-richsaline water or Sulfate-rich ground water.
This fact, as noted already at the Hokkaido side of this tunnel, indicates that the exchangeable cation compositions of smectites are strongly controlled by the chemical compositions of the ambient seepage waters, and that it can be possible to estimate the quality of the ambient seepage waters from the exchangeable cation compositions of smectites.

An improved method for preparing thin sections of swelling rocks (e.g. montmorillonite rock) is newly proposed in this paper.
Chips of swelling rocks were immersed three times in 1N KCl solution for 24h to saturate with K+ ion, rinsed three times with ethanol to exchange pore water and thenkept in contact with ethanol.
After these treatments, the chips were hardened by either of the following two methods. 1) The chips were impregnated with newly prepared epoxy resin (Petropoxy 154) under 40 to 60°C and 10-2 torr for 12h. 2) The chips, the chips were rinsed three times with xylene to exchange pore ethanol, then added Canada balsam, heated at 60°C for 2 to 3days and heated at 120°C until Canada balsam was completely solidified.
To polish the chips and thin sections, dilute KCl solution (0.1-0.5N) was used
By this method, thin sections of swelling rocks are easily prepared because swelling property is lost and the hardener becomes more permeating.

The object of the investigation was to study mineral compositions of Amakusa pottery stones and their properties in order to characterize their features. The pottery stones have been utilized as raw materials for china of high quality and porcelains such as electrical porcelains for ultra high voltage.
In pottery stones, quartz is the most abundant and important mineral. The quartz grains showed some strains along a-axis, and from the comparision of transformation temperature to cristobalite, the quartz grains included in its pottery stones were more reactive than that of pegmatite. Two kinds of sericite different in size are observed at the interstices among quartz grains. X-ray diffraction showed that coarse particles are the 2M1 type and fine particles are 1M. Kaolin mineral is also contained as aggregates of minnute grains and electron microscopy exposed that they are well crystallized. Mixed-layer minerals such as smectite-Al chlorite andsmectite-mica were often determined by X-ray examination, though smectite was rarely found. The smectite-mica regularly mixedlayer mineral is characteristicallyincluded only in the pottery stones of Sarayama vein.
The features such as thermal properties and plasticity of the pottery stones are discussed in relation with their mineral compositions and the properties of constituent minerals.

The settling process of Roseki clay suspension in the dispersion and flocculation states were investigated under D. C. field. The dispersed suspensions were prepared by three methods; 1) the ion-exchange treatment with Na-and OH-mixed resin, 2) the addition of dispersing agent, 3) the p H control with sodium hydroxide. These suspensions showed the same characteristic sedimentation pattern. The particles accumulated rapidly on the anode plate by the action of electrophoresis with the increment of electric current. The sediment with 65% concentration could be obtained at the state of cake. The flocculated suspension prepared by the ion-exchange treatment with H-and OH-mixed resin showed the pattern similar to compressive sedimentation. The sediment was concentrated slowly by the action of electro-osmosis with small electric current. The effects of applied potential, temperature, p H and the concentration of electrolyte on the sedimentation under D. C. field were discussed. The efficiency of the solid-liquid separation of the suspension was also evaluated.
