An improved method for preparing thin sections of swelling rocks (e.g. montmorillonite rock) is newly proposed in this paper.
Chips of swelling rocks were immersed three times in 1N KCl solution for 24h to saturate with K
+ ion, rinsed three times with ethanol to exchange pore water and thenkept in contact with ethanol.
After these treatments, the chips were hardened by either of the following two methods. 1) The chips were impregnated with newly prepared epoxy resin (Petropoxy 154) under 40 to 60°C and 10
-2 torr for 12h. 2) The chips, the chips were rinsed three times with xylene to exchange pore ethanol, then added Canada balsam, heated at 60°C for 2 to 3days and heated at 120°C until Canada balsam was completely solidified.
To polish the chips and thin sections, dilute KCl solution (0.1-0.5N) was used
By this method, thin sections of swelling rocks are easily prepared because swelling property is lost and the hardener becomes more permeating.
