    Deep-sea hydrothermal sub-vents, subjacent to seafloor hydrothermal vents, are of significant interest as a new scientific frontier in a number of fields. This report analyzes data obtained in ocean-drilling surveys at submarine hydrothermal vents on the Suiyo Seamount in the Izu-Bonin Arc, Pacific Ocean. A high-temperature deep-sea hydrothermal system related to dacitic arc-volcanism has been drilled using a tethered, submarine rock-drill system as a part of the Archaean Park Project. The benthic multi-coring system (BMS) employed allows for direct sampling of microorganisms, rocks and fluids beneath hydrothermal vents. These surveys obtained direct data regarding subjacent extreme environments under extreme conditions of 308°C and greater than 140 atmospheres. Evaluation of the vertical distribution and stereo chemistry of amino acids in such vigorous sub-vent environments leads to a model of deep-sea subterranean chemistry and biology that describes a lack of evidence of abiotically synthesized amino acids. Unexpected large enantiomeric excesses of L-form amino acids supported the existence of a vigorous subjacent microbial oasis in a hydrothermal subsystem. A model of deep-sea subterranean chemistry and biology is proposed, describing optimal microbial activities rather than abiotically synthesized amino acids components.

    The variable surface charges of natural allophane were measured by the potentiometric titration at the three ionic strengths (I=0.001, I=0.01 and I=0.1) under CO2 free system. The results showed that the total charge of natural allophane strongly depended on the ionic strength and that the point of zero charge was pH=5.0. The titration curve obtained at I=0.1 system was analyzed by means of surface complexation modeling. The results of the modeling revealed that the surface charge of allophane was originated from the combinative contribution of protonation/deprotonation of aluminol site and deprotonation of silanol site. The contribution of aluminol to the total surface charge was 5 times larger than that of silanol. The acidity constants and surface site densities estimated from I=0.1 system successfully described the charging behavior of I=0.01 system, confirming the validity of proposed mechanism of the surface reaction.

    In recent ban of use of asbestos product in Japan, sepiolite has been attracted as an asbestos substitute. Sepiolite from China consisting of long fibers has been used as an asbestos substitute, but the recent high production and consumption causes of poor sepiolite materials containing small amount of tremolite asbestos as an impurity. For the safety use of Chinese sepiolite, precise analysis of contaminated tremolite and product management are quite important. This study determined how to detect and quantify the contaminated tremolite precisely. For the quantitative analysis, we prepared standard sepiolite samples containing known amounts of tremolite using fibrous tremolite sample produced from Yamaga, Kumamoto Prefecture and pure sepiolite sample from Hebei, China. For the preparation, various methods for equally mixing of tremolite in sepiolite matrix were studied. A conventional X-ray diffractmeter was employed for the analysis of contaminated tremolite for routinely quality control. A calibration curve was prepared for the quantitative analysis. This method showed the detection lower limit of 0.5% tremolite in sepiolite. Using the prepared calibration curve, we analyzed some sepiolite products, and revealed that dispersion of sepiolite product in isopropyl alcohol makes the variance of measured values small and enhance reliability of quantitative analysis.

    In recent years, long fiber sepiolite from China has been used as an asbestos substitute in Japan. It is known that the long fiber sepiolite from China somtimes contain tremolite as an impurities, and our previous report described a method of quantitative analysis of tremolite in sepiolite sample by XRD. However, in order to know the content of only fibrous tremolite which is attributed to asbestos, it is necessary to discriminate the form of tremolite particles. In this research, forms of tremolite particles contained in long fiber sepiolite from China were observed under a three dimensional (3D) particle measurement laser microscope (3D-LM) and a polarized microscope (PLM), and each content of fibrous and non-fibrous particles could be measured in wt%. By this measurement, a constant relationship between width (x) and thickness (z) of tremolite particle was found as z=0.46x. This empirical equation was examined from the morphological view of tremolite, and presumed to be held good in general. By this equation, the weight ratio of the fibrous and non-fibrous particles of tremolite can be calculated. It was evaluated that fibrous tremolite in the total particles of tremolite contained was about 9 wt% in the long fiber sepiolite sample from China. It is concluded that the content of fibrous tremolite in a sepiolite sample can be seen in wt% based on the content of the total tremolite in the sepiolite sample measured by the XRD and the ratio of fibrous tremolite in total tremolite particles measured by 3D-LM and PLM.

    Typhoon “Rusa”(No.0215) attacked the Republic of Korea from August 31 to September 1, 2002. Depended on this typhoon, the heavy rainfall was brought through the Korean Peninsula. In Particularly, 100mm of hourly precipitation and 870mm of one day precipitation were recorded on August 31 in Kangnung where is located in the north-east of Korea. The accumulated precipitation at Kangnung amounted to 898mm from August 30 to September 1. During heavy rainfall, many slope failures occurred.
    The one failured slope was investigated in this study to make clear the mechanism of slope failure with special attention to clay veins developed on it by means of X-ray diffraction, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and computer simulation.

    Les vermiculite qulques origines ont été importé au Japon. Par investigations de diffractions de la rayon X et analyses chimique sur ces vermiculites, nous avons trouvé que la vermiculitoide (la vermiculite généralment parlant) ont été contenus qulque phases des couchés silices mélangés. De ce resulta, nous avons arrivé une conclusion que la vermiculite est le nom générique de la mineral en procedé de désagrégation entre le mica et la chlorite.
    D'autre part, qulque prétraites chimiques et reaction decomposé de H2O2, la vermiculite sont gonfrés sa volume sans changer de son strucuture de christaux. Sur ce vermiculite gonfré, nous avons trouvé une phenomene de transeformer entre des phases de couches melange. De gonfrement de vermiculite sont aussi une sorte de la procedé de désegrégation.
