The purpose of this paper is to clarify the actual situation of business behavior in the condensed milk manufacturing industry with a focus on the Awa area during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Establishment of the condensed milk manufacturing industry in Awa area, the transition from pan to Inoue kettle, was activated by the introduction of the vacuum kettle. The Awa area which includes Mineoka-ranch, is a land of Japan’s dairy industry foundation, and can be said to be an important area that has achieved dairy industry modernization and scale. In the Meiji era, many condensed milk manufacturing companies declined due market competition. On the other hand, product improvement and new market development was carried out by surviving companies. In the Taisho period, the condensed milk manufacturing industry in Awa and Kimitsu Counties increased and integrated its business, and the Awa area established a footing as a major producer of condensed milk. During this period of growth and integration the Meiji Dairies Corporation and the Morinaga Milk Industry Co., Ltd. evolved as a comprehensive and integrated enterprise.
