Drug is classified into such internal medicine, injection drug, and external medicine by the route of administration. Since internal medicine and injections are frequently used in clinical practice, doctors and pharmacists understand well, properly selected and administered. In contrast, there are cases where the external medicine is inappropriately used because it is regarded as a medicine which is safe and few adverse effects. There are a lot of dosage forms for external medicines such as suppositories, ointments, creams, powders, eye drops, and inhalants, etc. Since each external medicines has pharmaceutical characteristics, it is indispensable to fully understand each dosage form. Although suppositories are understood to have fast absorption and strong effect by doctors and pharmacists, there are many exceptions when examining the package insert. Differences between ointment and cream are not correctly understood except by dermatologists. Pharmaceutical ingredients affect the effects and side effects compared to tablets as for external medicine. In switching from an brand-name drug to a generic drug, pay attention to ingredients. Since external medicine is the same medicine as an internal medicine or injections, in order to use properly to the patient, a fully understanding is important.
