    Disinfectant by-products other than trihalomethane have been newly included in the WHO guidelines for drinking water. Many of these by-products are produced and used on an industrial scale.
    This paper reviews these by-products in respect of their physicochemical properties, industrial output and major uses, analytical methods, and environmental levels and fates.

    This paper presents an analytical method for arsenic, selenium and antimony in natural water samples using batch hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry equipped with a flame heated quartz tube.
    The system is applicable for the measurement of sub μg/L level of these elements in water samples. The concentration of hydrochloric acid in the sample and amount of injected sodium borohydride was optimized for each element. For complete reduction of antimony (V) to stibine, both potassium iodide and thiourea were found effective. Reduction of selenium (VI) to selenium (IV) was accomplished by heating the sample in 6M hydrochloric acid to 90°C for 20 to 30 min. This method was then applied to environmental samples. Arsenic was found in a range of sub μg/L in fresh water samples and a few μg/L in sea water samples. Selenium was not detected. Antimony was found in a range of 0.2 to 4 p g/L. One sample exceeded the guideline (2μg/L) set by the Japan Environment Agency.

    Organic components in the water of Tamagawa River were analyzed by GC/MS to study the influence of chemicals from the river basin. Eighty-one kinds of compounds containing n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, plasticizers, fatty acids, pesticides, etc. were identified. Organophosphoric acid triesters (TCEP, TBXP, TBP, TPP), pesticides (CAT, IBP, diazinon, atrazin, MBPMC, chlorpyrif os, bromacil) and aroma chemical (galaxolide) were detected in water samples at five locations by using solid phase extraction. Among four organophosphoric acid triesters tested, TCEP showed the highest concentration (370-7.3ng/l) and TPP was the lowest (1.0-6.0ng/l) . Among all the pesticides tested, CAT showed the highest concentration (110ng/l-not detectable) and bromacil was undetectable. Galaxolide was detected in all of samples and ranged from 0.7ng/l to 100ng/l. It seems possible that galaxolide can be an indicator compound in domestic sewage water due to the increased concentrations toward downstream.

    I visited Chile to inspect the environmental situation and several institutes from 13th to 30th November 1993 by support from the Okayama Prefectural Overseas Studying System. I introduce the environmental problems, government policies and the actural circumstances of environmental studies in several institutes in Chile.
