Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is used for low-concentration samples including phenols in the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) method. However, SPE sorbents (except for a batch-mode SPE operation) have to be generally packed into a cartridge with difficulty in handling particulate sorbents. To overcome this problem, we previously reported a technique to prepare a molding-type solid-phase extraction medium (M-SPEM) by bonding particles by chemically cross-linked reaction. These kinds of sorbents are easy to handle compared with particulate sorbents. In this study, a novel SPE procedure for the pretreatment of water samples with an M-SPEM was proposed for the sequential injection spectrophotometric determination of phenol using 4-aminoantipyrine. The developed method
can be applied to the determination of phenol in industrial wastewater, which binds polyethyleneimine-modified particulate sorbent consisting of divinylbenzene and glycidyl methacrylate.
