The assessment method for anti-wear property of hydraulic fluids using the Vickers vane pump was studied. Informations obtained from former vane pump tests were poor because the wear was measured only at the end of each running of the pump.
This report explains the procedure to trace the time dependent wear progress which constitutes main part of the newly submitted test method.
Repeatability of the vane pump test is improved by setting up a certain set of rules regarding of the cartridge and the cover bolts fastening; a fine fluid filtration by a stainless steel wire net filter with pore size smaller than 10μm. Concavity of the cartridge bushings were not rejected to avoid seizure.
Compatibility of the circuit can be accepted if in more than 4 tests, the repeatability of the vane pump wear with a mineral base hydraulic oil with anti-wear additive gives coefficient of variation smaller than 10 percent.

Experiments on vane pump wear test following the newly submitted test method were reported. Tests were performed on mineral oils and fire resistant fluids HFA, HFB, HFC and HFD. Wear of the cam ring and vanes of the Vickers vane pumps show wide variety by fluid types and pressure.
Three types of wear progress in the vane pump test was recognized by the experiments: the first is, saturation in a certain running time; the second is, linear increase of wear with time; and the third is, immediate increase of wear rate after a certain running time.
Wear by R&O mineral oil (HM) increases linearly with running time of at least 300 hours when the pump is rotated at 1500 rev/min with a pressure of 70 bar. In contrast to this, the wear by phosphate ester (HFD) at 140 bar saturates in 100 hours and the worn mass itself is fairly small.
