This report presents a study on the yard of Shinden-style residences in terms of the characteristicsof space in Heian era. In the case of the southern yard of Shinden, even in a same ceremony and in a certain residence, the way of standing line of nobles following thier rank is not always same; sometimes it headed to east and sometimes not. Same tendency is found in the case of the yard in front of Tai. These facts are considered very unique for the yard planning of ancient residences, however, following things can be pointed out to explaining this irregular line direction.
1. Because of a pond located at the south of the yard, the main entrance gates were built both east and west sides of the site. It may forced the line of nobles' standing in east-west direction.
2. Because of Chumon-rou joined at the one side of the southern extremity of Tai, the width of the southern yard in front of Tai was relatively small in east-west direction.
