The subject of this research is the garden of "Hakujitsuso", the residential home of Yonekichi Hiraiwa (1898-1986), who is the editor of "Animal Literature" and an animal researcher. Hakujitsuso was decided to be redeveloped in 2020.
Hakujitsuso is located at 3-12-2 Jiyugaoka, Meguro-ku, Tokyo, and has a total site area of 3618.89 m2. As a result of research, this garden was designed and constructed as a Western-style garden that was popular in Japan in the 1920s and was designed by Dr. Keiji Uehara (1889-1981). The construction was completed in 1929 (Showa 4) by the Uehara Landscape Research Institute. However, the beautifully finished garden was soon transformed into an animal garden for Hiraiwa's researched dogs and other animals. As of October 2019, the Western-style garden pool and garden gate, which are the most significant points of the garden, retain the taste of a Western-style garden. From the completion of the garden to the present, it has been transformed into a garden as a place to keep animals and as a place to bury and commemorate animals. In that sense, it was a garden that emphasized practicality for Yonekichi Hiraiwa, and embodied a practical garden that was a popular idea in garden design in the 1920s.
