JOURNAL FREE ACCESSPowdered natural magnetite was compressed under one-directional high pressure, and after the removal of the pressure, it was examined magnetically by means of an astatic magnetometer. A remanent magnetic vector was found in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the applied pressure. The present author proposed to call such a remanent magnetism caused by one-directional pressure Piezo-Remanent Magnetism (PRM) in order to distinguish it from TRM, DRM, CRM and other remanent magnetism.
The effects of one-directional pressure on the remanent magnetism of rock have been examined with an artificial rock made of white cement in which fine ferromagnetic minerals were dispersed. It was found that both the intensity and the direction of remanent magnetization changed as the pressure increased.
The field evidence showing PRM was found from several canyons where some rock specimens were sampled from the side wall.View full abstractDownload PDF (568K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSBoth the dipole and nondipole components of the present geomagnetic field are analyzed by calculating the orientation of hypothetical geocentric dipoles which, if acting alone, would produce the present geomagnetic field as observed at points on a grid covering the earth at 10° intervals. The dispersion in direction of these virtual geomagnetic poles due to the nondipole component of thee geomagnetic field (1) is larger in the southern hemisphere than in the northern; (2) increases with increase in latitude; (3) at all latitudes is of the same order of magnitude as the dispersion due to a wobble of several tens of degrees of the main geocentric dipole; (4) is anomalously small over a region of continental dimensions in the central Pacific ocean. The parameters describing these variations of poles are transformed to parameters describing variations of the geomagnetic field for comparison with paleomagnetic data.View full abstractDownload PDF (1398K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSTwo models representing the variation with time of the direction of the geomagnetic field are considered. In the first, the present geomagnetic field is rotated about the geographic axis; in the second fluctuations in the position of the magnetic dipole having a Fisherian distribution and centred on the geographical pole are considered.
The dispersions of directions of magnetization at points on the earth's surface for both models are found to be latitude dependent, and for the first model the dispersions in the southern hemisphere are considerably greater than those at corresponding latitudes in the northern. The origin of dispersion of magnetization of rocks is discussed and a method of separating that due to secular variation of the palaeo-geomagnetic field is considered.View full abstractDownload PDF (598K) -
