The plasticizing effects of food antioxidants such as α-tocopherol on the biodegradable plastic poly- (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) P- (HB-HV) were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and tensile testing. It was found that butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and α-tocopherol were useful as plasticizers for P- (HB-HV) (BHA >BHT >α-tocopherol). The heat of fusion of P- (HB-HV) was markedly reduced by, the addition of BHA. The elongation to breakage was enhanced by the addition of an antioxidant, and Young's modulus was decreased to 50 MPa by adding 30% BHA, BHT and α-tocopherol. The bioplastic containing antioxidant, therefore, is useful as a biodegradable eco-material.

The influence of polyoxyethylene lauryl ethers on the binding of stearyltrimethylammonium chloride (STAC) to human hair was investigated. The nonionic surfactants decreased the amount of bound STAC to hair. The effect was more prominent with the nonionic surfactant with a longer polyoxyethylene chain. The decreasing effect was correlated to the hydrophilicity of the nonionic surfactant. The binding of the nonionic surfactant of a long polyoxyethylene chain to hair was also decreased by STAC. The analysis of the isotherms of a Langmuir-type binding indicated that the surfactant having a long polyoxyethylene chain reduces both the binding sites in saturation and the binding constant. Thermodynamic study and the surface analysis by FT-IR or X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested that the decreasing effect was caused by the interaction of STAC with the nonionic surfactant of a long polyoxyethylene chain in the aqueous phase and on the hair surface.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an iron-deficient diet on the hepatic glutathione (GSH) level, glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity and cytochrome P-450 (P-450) content in young female rats. Wistar-strain female rats (40-50 g in body wt.) were fed ad libitum with a normal diet (50 ppm Fe) or iron-deficient diet (8 ppm Fe) diet for 4 weeks. Compared to the control rats given the normal diet lower feed intake, weight gain, liver weight and hemoglobin concentration were found in those fed on the iron-deficient diet. In respect of the hepatic drug-metabolizing system, an increase in GSH level was observed together with the induction of P-450 content in the iron-deficient animals. The GST activity against three different substrates (1-chloro-2, 4-dinitrobenzene, 3, 4-dichloronitrobenzene and trans-4-phenyl-3-buten-2-one) was also higher in the iron-deficient rats. The data suggest that iron-deficient young female animals may respond differently to drugs and chemicals than their non-iron-deficient counterparts.

There are approximately 13.7 million people in Japan with pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), and this number is expected to increase further. The objective of this study is to establish measures for preventing diabetes, and to ascertain the correlation of dietary factors and environmental factors with abnormal glucose tolerance. Data were analyzed from an interview-based survey conducted on residents undergoing basic health screening. The results show a strong correlation between abnormal glucose tolerance and both hypertension and obesity, and that factors such as skipping breakfast, eating dinner out, drinking and smoking were involved in the development of pre-diabetes.

Under the present circumstances where we are moving towards to an ultra-aged society, it can be considered important to understand the actual conditions and habits of clothes-wearing of people of all ages from the young to the aged. In order to collect data for the comfortable clothing life of men, a questionnaire about the present state of men's clothes-wearing was conducted in 2001 on 1, 165 men from 13 to 94 years old, and the following results were obtained. Regardless of age, men preferred trunks to briefs. As regards the number of days to wear the same clothes before washing them, most of the people wore shirts, socks, briefs and trunks only for one day. The majority of the people wore pajamas for one to three days in summer, and many of them did so for four days to a week in winter. Many raised opinions about clothes indicating concern about the appearance in respect to outerwear and about the comfortability in respect to underwear and nightwear. What were important when purchasing clothes were color, design and price for young people, and comfortability and materials used for elderly people.
