In the course of screening for the antimicrobial compounds contained in rare mushrooms, we isolated bisnoryangonin from Pholiota aurivella. The structure of bisnoryangonin was identified by HRESI-MS and NMR spectral data (1-D ( 1H- and 13C-NMR) and 2-D (HMQC and HMBC)). This is the first report on the presence of bisnoryangonin in Pholiota aurivella. The antimicrobial activities of bisnoryangonin against two microbial organisms (Bacillus megaterium and Microbacterium foliorum, which were isolated as food contaminants) were tested. Bisnoryangonin showed more potent antimicrobial activity than butyl-4-hydroxybenzoate which is used as a food additive.

The following are the evaluation results of motion adaptability when examinees put on and take off layered jackets with different frictional values between materials. These results were evaluated against Electromyogram (EMG), motion time, and sensory evaluation. 1) The different attachments of jackets linings affected muscle activity during dressing/undressing. In particular, sleeve linings were effective in reducing muscle loads during dressing/undressing. 2) Different innerwear materials affected muscle activity during dressing/undressing. In general, the muscle activity was more affected by the difference in innerwear than by the attachment of jackets linings. 3) Estimated friction coefficients of layered clothing and integrated EMG (iEMG) of dressing/undressing motions showed a positive correlation. Due to high friction, change in movements and a reduction in muscle activity were also observed during undressing. 4) The amount of muscle activity during dressing was more than that during undressing. 5) The dressing conditions had a uniform effect on motion times, sensory evaluations, and EMG. Although the motion times and sensory evaluations could not detect slight differences in friction, the EMG could detect a difference.

Twenty-eight healthy female subjects aged 61 to 88 years old wearing only shorts and brassieres lay in a supine position on a bed and their cold/warm thresholds were measured over 26 body regions under the conditions of 28°C ambient temperature and 50% R.H. Ten female subjects aged 20 to 25 years old were also measured under the same conditions as the control. The cold/warm thresholds of the leg, foot and sole were high and those of the forehead, cheek and chin were low for each group. Both thresholds were higher for the elderly than they were for the young women, and they increased with age. In addition, principal component analysis of the cold/warm thresholds revealed that individual differences in regional contrast between the front-back/trunk-peripheral of the cold/warm threshold were greater among the elderly than they were among the young women and they increased with age.

We evaluated the washing performance of 3 basic type and 6 domestic automatic washing machines using the evaluation method of Katayama et al. The 3 basic types were the agitator type (JIS standard washing machine), the tumbler style (Wascator), and the whirlpool type (Two-tub washing machine). The 6 domestic automatic washing machines were 4 tumble style washing machines, 1 whirlpool type washing machine and 1 beat-wash type washing machine sold in the last five years. As a result of a comparison of their washing performance, the JIS standard washing machine removed dirt much better than the others, and its Mechanical Action Value was much higher than the others. The two-tub washing machine showed the second best detergency and Mechanical Action Value. The Wascator showed much worse detergency, and its Mechanical Action Value varied widely. We also tried to examine the washing performance of the standard washing course of each of the 6 domestic automatic washing machines for 4.0 kg loads washed in water for 10 min. As a result of a comparison with their previous washing performance, their detergency was no different, but their Mechanical Action Values varied widely.
