    The cellular harm or mutation results from the indirect reaction through reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by ultraviolet (UV) ray or direct reaction (such as cyclobutane pyrimidine dimmer (CPD) and 6-4 photoproduct). The amount of intracellular guanine nucleotide irradiated by the 0-80 J/m2 UV-C (254 nm) was measured by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV). The oxidation current peak of intracellular guanine nucleotide was observed. The current peak which reflects the concentration of intracellular guanine base decreased to about 80% of initial value with 80 J/m2 of UV-irradiation. The concentration of guanine nucleotide could be estimated from the oxidation peak current in CV. Moreover, formation of 8-oxodG was estimated by the increase in the mutation frequency from UV-irradiated cells of base excision repair deficient strain. It was shown that the decrease in the peak current is due to the oxidation of the guanine base. This analytical method is useful for the elucidation of the oxidation mechanism of the cell and biological tissues.

    It is difficult to acquire all of biosphere parameters for geological disposal at the repository site because several hundreds of the parameters have to be dealt with in one calculation case of the biosphere assessment. Before site-specific activities, it is important to develop the data acquisition methodology of biosphere parameters applicable to any proposed repository site. The methodology for identification of the priority of the parameters was developed for the effective data acquisition of biosphere parameters at the site. First of all, flow diagram was constructed to evaluate the availability of the existing generic biosphere dataset. It was found to be effective for the data acquisition at the site to focus on the element-specific parameters with the existing dataset. Secondly, the priority of the data acquisition was identified for element-specific parameters at the site, with considering the variation of dose rate by combining the significant element-specific parameters. The availability of the existing generic biosphere dataset and the priority on data acquisition were identified for the element-specific parameters of key radionuclides in the safety assessment of geological disposal that should be acquired at the site. This priority list would be useful for effective data acquisition at the site.

    Radioactivity levels in 137 foods commonly consumed daily in Japan were evaluated to determine the committed effective dose in the Japanese adults. The levels of radioactivity for 238U, 232Th, 226Ra, 210Pb, 210Po, 90Sr, 137Cs and 239+240Pu were ND-5.2 Bq/kg fresh weight, ND-0.18 Bq/kg fresh weight, ND-3.9Bq/kg fresh weight, ND-45 Bq/kg fresh weight, ND-120 Bq/kg fresh weight, ND-9.9 Bq/kg fresh weight, ND-19 Bq/kg fresh weight and ND-0.010 Bq/kg fresh weight, respectively. The committed effective dose was estimated to be 0.80 mSv from the intake of the foods. The effective dose was greater than the world mean value for adults of 0.12 mSv by natural radioactive elements in the uranium and thorium series from the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) 2000 because of the large contribution from 210Po in seafood.

    The International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements, ICRU, has recommended ‘operational quantities’, such as ambient, directional and personal dose equivalent, for external radiation monitoring. Many discussions have been made on the operational quantities, including necessity of these quantities. The operational quantities have a long history, and ICRU published many reports on this issue. This paper reviews the evolution of operational quantities in the relevant ICRU reports and the ICRP 2007 recommendations.

    The absorbed dose rate in air of airborne gamma-rays and the concentration of radon progeny in surface air have been observed continuously in Maizuru, Japan. When data observed on fine days were plotted, with dose rate as ordinate and concentration as abscissa, these points traced with a lapse of time illustrated an anticlockwise looping for each day. This result suggests that the variation of absorbed dose rate lags behind that of concentration of radon progeny; this is due to the delay time incurred as the concentration level gradually varies from ground surface to upper air. Radon progeny concentrations in precipitation and in surface air have been observed there in order to study the relationship between the two concentrations and the influence of precipitation patterns on the concentration in precipitation. Results obtained from analysis of the observed data suggest that radon progeny in precipitation originate mainly from scavenging within the cloud (rainout) and not from that below the cloud (washout).

    Interactions between cosmic rays and atmospheric components produce various nuclear fragments. Cosmogenic 7Be distributes uniformly in the atmosphere which covers all over the earth. Thus, the vertical and horizontal transport of 7Be in the stratosphere as well as troposphere will work as an effective tracer with half life of 53.3 days. Many studies have been conducted on 7Be atmospheric concentration and deposition onto the ground. Generally, the atmospheric 7Be concentration and the 7Be deposition show seasonal and yearly variations which are controlled by solar activity, cosmic ray intensity, atmospheric circulation and other mechanisms such as “washout” and “rainout”. This paper presents atmospheric 7Be concentration and 7Be deposition data obtained by the authors as well as other investigators. The variations of atmospheric 7Be concentration and 7Be deposition and their influential factors are also reviewed.

    In Thailand, radioactive materials are widely used for the industry, medicine, research and development fields. Reported here are background and recent developments in the national nuclear legislation system, including regulation of radiation safety and current status of nuclear program in Thailand. Under the Atomic Energy for Peace Act, the Thai Atomic Energy Commission (Thai AEC) is authorized to approve regulations respecting, the conversion, enrichment, processing, reprocessing, possession, import, export, use, packaging, transport, management and storage of nuclear materials. The most recent developments are related to the New Ministerial Regulation on Licensing Requirements Procedures and Nuclear Material, By-Product or Atomic Energy Processing B. E 2550 (A. D. 2007) issued under the Atomic Energy for Peace Act, B. E. 2504 (A. D. 1961). Currently, the Thai Cabinet is discussing the draft new Atomic Energy for Peace Act which is to revise the Act. The draft Act is to sets forth criteria for protecting individuals, society and the environment from radiation hazards with the perspective for anticipated nuclear power sector development in Thailand.
