During these four years (1964-1967), the six cases of multiple primary malignant tumors were observed in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Kyushu University.
These cases consisted of 1) 59 year-old male, carcinomas of the breast and the bottom of oral cavity, 2) 68 year-old male, carcinomas of the caecum and the maxilla, 3) 76 year-old male, the gastric and the laryngeal cancers, 4) 79 year-old male, cancers of the lower lip and the larynx, 5) 39 year-old male, the gastric carcinoma and reticulum cell sarcoma of the epipharynx and 6) 48 year-old female, carcinoma of the cervix and reticulum cell sarcoma of the epipharynx, and the diagnoses of malignancies in them were histologically confirmed.
The incidence of the six cases of multiple primary malignancies corresponded to 1.4% of the 420 cases of malignant tumors in our clinic during the same period.
In the three cases of them, the two primary malignant tumors were historically considered to have occurred independently almost at the same time. In the remaining three cases, the intervals between onset of the first malignancy and that of the second ranged from six months to three years.
On the treatment of the patients with malignancy, the possibility of existence of the multiple primary malignant tumors should be always kept in minds for physicians.
It should be especially remembered that the radiation therapy for the first malignancy has a tendency to cover the gastroenteric complaints originating in the second malignancy.
