The internal auditory meatus of otologic patients were x-rayed by Stenvers' method, Towne's method and occipitofrontal projection in an attempt to compare the competence of these 3 methods for evaluating inner ear pathology. Stever's method was used in 22 cases, Towne's method was used in 12 cases and occipito-frontal projection, in 10 cases. The x-ray films thus obtained were evaluated by otologists and classified into 3 grades, i. e., excellent, readable and poor.
With Stevers' method the percentage of excellent films was highest (68-77%), with 18% of films being quite unreadable. Towne's method provided an extremely low percentage of excellent films (0-42%) with the highest percentage of poor films (25-75%). With occipito-frontal projection, on the other hand, the percentage of excellent films was somewhat lower than with Stenvers' method (60-70%), but few films were labelled as poor (0-20%).
Roentgenography by occipito-frontal projection, being simple to perform, is considered to be the procedure of choice for use in private offices and clinics as a screening test for pathology of the internal auditory meatus.
