In order to study the relationship between the imbalance of the autonomic nervous system and the respiratory function in Meniere's disease, the pupil diameters of both eyes were measured simultaneously on 39 patients with Meniere's disease. Seven of the 39 patients showed hippus and the hippus disappeared during breath-holding or hyperventilation in 2 of these 7 patients. Fifteen of the 39 patients showed a delay of the redilation phase of the light reflex, and the delay of the redilation phase disappeared during the breath-holding or hyperventilation in 2 of these 15 patients. In the literature, breath-holding i ncreases the blood CO
2, and hyperventilation decreases the blood CO
2. It is said that the autonomic nervous system is influenced by the blood CO2. From these observations, the authors hypothesize that Meniere's disease is closely related to a functional abnormality of the autonomic nervous system.
