JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe correlation between the extent of neck node metastasis and the prognosis in previously untreated cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and pharynx was studied.
In patients with oral cavity cancer, the prognosis became poor as the degree of N-stage, the degree of pN-stage, and the number of histologically positive nodes increased. The five-year crude survival was 78.9% in tongue carcinoma patients with no histologically positive node, while that was 0% in those with more than five histologically positive nodes. The prognosis of patients with oral cavity cancer other than tongue carcinoma deteriorated dramatically when there were more than two histologically positive neck nodes.
In patients with carcinoma of the meso-and hypopharynx, the correlation between the neck node metastasis and the prognosis was less prominent, although the high degree of pN-stage (pN2, pN3) and more than two histologically positive nodes were absolutely unfavorable prognostic factors.View full abstractDownload PDF (7899K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSFor establishment of the treatment policy of tongue cancer, the treatment results of 205 cases of tongue cancer which were treated in Gunma Cancer Center from 1978 to 1988 were analised according to the stage of primary lesions. In T1 cases Radium implant is seen as a resonable treatment, but even in T1 case radical operations should be concidered if the sight of the tumor is in an unsutible position for the implant. In T2 cases, 38 cases were treated with Radium implants, but in 20 cases the outcome was unsatisfactory. This indicates that the choice of Radium implant for T2 cases should be carefully determined. In T3 cases, radical surgery should be undertaken. In T4 cases, 18 cases were controlls. In those cases Radium implants were performed without the concideration of the rate radiation side effects. As a result of the development reconstructive surgery, the treatment policy of tongue cancer has been changed. Radical operations with reconstructive surgery will likely be chosen more than Radium impinatation in the future.View full abstractDownload PDF (16157K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSComplete responders to chemotherapy for palliation had longer medin survival as copmpared with partial responders and non-responders in patients with recurrent loco-regional or desseminated head and neck cancer. Meanwhile complete responders to chemotherapy as neo-adjuvant setting had also better survival than partial responders and non-responders. It is clear that there is a close correlation between response to chemotherapy and prognosis. So it is important to achieve not only clinical complete response but also histologic complete response to get higher survival.View full abstractDownload PDF (8486K) -
