    The role of the inferior colliculus (IC) to the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was investigated in rats by the following experiment consisting of; (1) observation of change in the ABRs and evoked potentials (EPs) of the IC before and after unilateral destruction of the cochlea. (2) observation of change in the wave form of EPs and ABRs before and after destruction of the IC. (3) recording of the EPs at various points in and around the IC. (4) search for the isopotential line in and around the IC. (5) recording of EPs to electrical stimulation of the IC. The EP of the central nucleus of the IC consists of one or two positive waves followed by a large negative wave. The wave form of the ABR seems to be a composite of a positive slow wave and several sequential fast wave-lets, and characteristics and origins of these two potentials are different to each other.
    The central nucleus of the IC is more important for generation of the positive slow component. A negative field is observed in the central nucleus of the IC, and a positive field surrounding this negative field is recorded as the positive slow wave of the ABR from the surface of the brain. A similar electrical potential field was also observed by the direct electrical stimulation of the IC, that is, a large negative potential was recorded at the central nucleus of the IC and a positive potential was observed at the surface of the brain, when the lateroventral part of the IC were stimulated electrically. Thus, the positive slow wave of the ABR is consisted mainly of this positive potential field, at least in latter part of the slow wave.
    The central nucleus of the IC might not be essential for generation of the several sequential fast waves of the ABR, because their latencies and amplitudes were not changed by destruction of the central nucleus of the IC. However, when the lesion was extended to or located in the lateroventral part of the IC, where the nerve fibers of the peripheral nuclei penetrate into the IC, potential V and VI were abolished whereas potential IV was remained unchanged. Thus,
    the structures peripheral to the IC play an important role for the generation of potential IV, and the lateoventral part of the IC is essential for generation of potential V and VI.

    There are many studies development of the crista ampullaris using TEM. This study demonstrates the morphological development of the crista ampullaris in the mouse using SEM.
    Crista ampullaris from the 13. 5th gestational day to the 2 weeks postnatal day of CBA/CBA mouse were studied.
    On the 13. 5th gestational day, there were numerous microvilli and primary cilium on the crista ampullaris. Sensory hairs appeared on the 14. 5th gestational day. Its kinocilium and stereocilia were short, and the length of stereocilia were almost equal. The formation of cupula which had fine net-work structures, started on the 14. 5th gestational day.

    1. メニエール病患者,および,末梢性めまい患者のリンパ球β受容体,血小板α2受容体を3H-DHA,3H-yohimbineを使って測定したが,疾患別では健康成人と比較し,最大結合量,解離定数とも差がなかった.また,めまい症状の有無により,患者を2群に分けて検討レたが,最大結合量,解離定数とも差はなかった.
    2. ストレスのアドレナリン性受容体への影響について,ラット耳下腺を使って検討したところ,拘束ストレスではα1β受容体の変動はみられないが,電気ショック•ストレスではβ受容体のみの増加がみられ,α1受容体の変動はみられなかった.
    3. 以上より,メニエール病,末梢性めまいの病因,病態には,アドレナリン性受容体の量的異常の関与はないと推察された.

    A retrospective study of 60 subglottic and subglottic extending laryngeal carcinomas diagnosed between 1955 and 1977 was carried out. The incidence of this series was 15 percent of 400 laryngeal cancers. Of the patients with subglottic lesions, only two cases were female.
    Primary subglottic carcinoma was 20 cases (5%) of 400 laryngeal cancers, subglottic spread of supra glottic type was four cases and that of glottic carcinoma was 36 cases.
    First symptoms were hoarseness in 95%, stridor in 51.7% and hemosputum in 1.7%. Thirty-five percent of this series had palpable lymph nodes in the neck.
    One-year, three-year and five-year survival rates in this subglottic spread group were 83.9%, 73.2% and 55.3% respectively.
    Of this series, the patients died of the primary laryngeal cancer were 23 cases; stomal recurrences were 95.7% (22 cases of 23 cancer deaths), metastases in the cervical lymph node were 43.5% (10/23) and distant metastases were 43.5% (10/23). Eighteen out of 60 subglottic spread cases had each emergency tracheotomy due to severe dyspnea.
    In this paper, emergency tracheotomy was pointed out as an important factor of local recurrence such as stomal recurrence.

    頭頸部癌の頸部リンパ節転移によって惹起された5例の頸動脈洞過敏症について述べた.本症候は頸動脈洞が腫瘍によって破壊される際に起こる-過性の被刺激状態で,徐脈,血圧下降,意識消失が主症状である.発作は全例1カ月以内に自然に消失した.腫瘍が頸動脈洞およびその周囲の組織を破壊することによって頸動脈洞反射がなくなるためと考えた.本発作が起こってから5例のうち4例は2カ月以内に死亡した.CSHSは頭頸部癌の末期患者を治療する際に念頭に置くべき症状と考える.

    Fine needle aspiration biopsy was performed in 115 lymph noes of 81 patients for definitive diagnosis.
    1) There was no false positive and the false negative rate was 3.8per cent.
    2) The result will be much improved, provided that cells themselves are surely aspirated, and that the detailed conditions of aspiration are ascertained through the discussion with the screener.
    3) Fine needle aspiration biopsy caused neither local recurrence nor metastasis.
    4) Considering that this method many times enables us not only to discern between benign and malignant tumors with rapidity, but also to presume their pathological types, we have found this technique to be of great value as a method for the diagnosis of the head and neck tumors.

    An attempt was made to identify and localize neuropeptides in the nasal region in order to obtain data on which to base our approach to the physiological functions of the nose. The indirect enzyme-labeled antibody technique was employed to detect these peptides. As a result, VIP was detected in olfactory epithelium; VIP and somatostatin in the olfactory nerve; VIP in the olfactory bulb; VIP and somatostatin in the rhinencephalon; VIP in the superior cervi-cal sympathetic ganglion; VIP, somatostatin, substance P and CCK-8 in the pterygopalatine ganglion; and VIP and somatostatin in the Gasserian ganglion.

    The protective effect of fosfomycin on cisplatin-induced ototoxicity was studied in rats. Sixty-four Fischer rats were injected intravenously with daily doses of 1, 2, 5 and 10mg/kg of cisplatine combined with or without 300mg/kg of fosfomycin for a varing period from 1 to 10 days. The total dose of 10mg/kg of cisplatin was given equally in all animals. The hair cell loss was evaluated by surface preparation techniques.
    Outer hair cell loss was most pronounced in the basal turn and in the first rows, and this loss spread from the basal turn towards the upper turns. No inner hair cell loss was observable in all animals. A comparison of different dosage schedules with a total dose of 10mg/kg of cisplatin showed that the higher daily dose for a shorter time period produced more marked loss of the outer hair cells.
    Outer hair cell loss apparently reduced in animals given both cisplatin and fosfomycin than in animals given cisplatin alone. Administration of 10mg/kg of cisplatin over a 10-day period with 1mg/kg/day caused outer hair cell loss of 100 percent in the basal part of the basal turn, whereas the same total dose of cisplatin with fosfomycin produced outer hair cell loss of 53.6 percent.
    The mechanism of reduction in ototoxicity may be considered as a result of reduction of renal damage.
