production of coal in Akita Prefecture is only 7-8to-104 tons Though the production is poor in quantity, almost all sorts of coals, anthracite, bituminous, sub-bituminous coal, lignite and peat, may be found in this district
There is only one coal field, called Ani, in the northern border of this prefecture. The northeastern part of the field, called Ogida and Moriyoshi, produceanthracite which may be originally the same bituminous or sub-bituminous coals as those of Kayakusa, Arase, Oani, etc. in the southwestern part of the field, called Aniai. Igneous. rocks (two-pyroxene porphyrite) intruded into the coal-bearing formation, accelerated the coalification by their heat effect, thus resulted the coal into natural coke at the direct contact, powder anthracite at a short distance, and hard anthracite at the moderate distance from them.
Lignite and peat are found at several location, but their production are yetsmall quantity, and are used only for heating purpose.
