The author describes the historical view of development of diesel engines, present status of diesel motor cars, specification, and forecast of engines. In Japan the production of diesel engines with precombustion chamber had been proceeded under the assistance of old army before and in war time. This is the to-day's base of industry of diesel engine. Engines for trucks and buses are superior to foreign made in their specification, quality and cost. One of the development of engines after war is the application of supercharge method by lutz type blower. This improved the engine powers especially. The investigation and manufacture of diesel engines with small di-splacement are the most important.

They are the urgent problems to enact the specifications of mobile oil and gear oil. Concerning to these problems, the author describes the points to be cared. on performance tests of oils. In frigid locality the temperatures of lubricating oil in moving car are unexpectedly low. For this reason multi-grade oil is demanded. According to the progress of engines the pressures which act to connecting rod bearing, cam, or valve lifter are going to be higher. In this concern, the nature of extreme pressure of lubricating oil is needed, Barium in additives which is blended in these high grade lubricating oils may be the cause of sticking of exhaust valve. By the use of hypoid gear several problems must be investigated on gear oil. Then the author describes some problems on greases.

author attended the 5th World Power Conference held in Vienna and the International Conference on Chemical Engineering in the Coal Industry in Britain in June. After that he inspected the coal chemical industry in Germany around the Ruhr district. The results of studies and the recent circumstances of industrial activities appeared in these conferences have been explained in datail in addition to his inspection in Germany. By this report we can understand the recent activities on fuel techniques.
The main studies which have attracted the author's special interests and have been reported in detail in this paper are “Thermal Treatments of Coal” by Idris Johns ofthe Coal Research Establishment for obtaining the solid smokeless fuel and “RecentDevelopments in Coal Utilization” by Reerink of the Coal Society of Germany whichhas explained the recent circumstances in the coal utilizations in Germany.

Gas turbine and free piston engine will be used for motor car motives in near future. The former has good points that engine volume and weight per power is relatively small but has a short point of large fuel consumption, the latter will be manufactured easily and don't select fuel quality. But for most cars gasoline engine of spark ignition type will be used still. Compression ratio of engines will be increase to 12: 1 or 13: 1 finally, and these engines will demand fuel over 100 octane number. Gasoline engines of fuel injection type will be practically used in next five years. These type engines don't demand high octane gasolines and have large power at high speed revolution and large torque at low speed revolution. The price of fuel injection systems will be cheapen to it of four barrel carburettor.
