This paper deals on some of the common problems concerning the properties in motor gasoline which were discussed widely by petroleum refining experts of the United States and European countries attending the 5th World Petroleum Congress and briefly describes the recent developments in refining technique to produce highoctane gasoline.
It was an agreed opinion that the increase in horse power and compression ratio of motor engines have created many problems in the field of gasoline production. One of these is engine noise, such as knocking and rumbling and also engine deposit. The other major problems are sensivity, segregation and icing of gasoline in addition to the long pending problem of octane number. Such subjects as isomerization, molecular shieve, quality improvement of catalytically cracked gasoline, extraction of aromatics using new solvents, and process flowsheets for high octane gasoline refining were also discussed in conjunction with recent developments in gasoline quality improvement processes.

Listening to the lectures relating to the petrochemical processes which had heen presented to Section IV of the Fifth World Petroleum Congress at New York, 1959, some interesting trends have heen pointed out. The production of petroleum aromatics is to be expected to increase still more, and above all, it is important to develope the chemical utilizations of such higher homologues as C8, C9 and C10 arom-atics. Preparation of naphthalene through hydrocracking of F.C.C. light cycle stock and synthesis of benzene from catalytic polymerization of acetylene may be realized in the mear future. The new processes for prodution of terephthalic acid have been supple-mented. In the field of production of acetylene (and ethylene) from liquid hydrocarbon stocks, the energetic technical competition is now in progress between several industrial companies. Some quite original or modified processes for synthesizing such monomers as butadiene, isoprene, acrylonitrile, etc. have been introduced.

In the 5th world Petroleum Congress-Section IV, the problems of utilization of petroleum products were discussed, and 29 reports published are classified to on fuels (gasolin, light oil, heavy oil etc.), lubricants and greases, engine, asphalts and crude oil. In this paper, all reports are explained in outline except on engine and crude oil. For instance, on gasoline, the comparison of performance and octane number required of american and european cars, the calculation of road octane number, a new antiknock agent, an abnormal combustion phenomena and so on are described. On lubricants, various kind of additive, boundary lubrication and so on are described.

In the 5th World Petroleum Congress-Section VII, the problems of engineering equipment and materials were discussed, and main reports were classified to the studies of corrosion and erosion, the results of ngineering interpretation using electronic computer, the prevention of pollution and noise, the prevention of explosions, the treatment of waste water and the improvement of present code and standards. In this paper, the Writer especially describes in detail the following two lectures.
    1) Pollution prevention through design and operation-A. Kibby.
    2) Noise problems in a large refinery-I. Robinson & M. Shirley.

The purpose of this study are to construct the tesh plant which continiously produces the so-called nitrohumic acid from coal and dilute nitric acid, For this purpose, at the outset, we selected two kinds of coal. one contain 70% of carbon and other 80% of carbon, and observed the reaction of these coals with dilute niric acid.
Particulary, as the factors having effectsupon practical operation, reaction temper-ature, consumed nitric acid, size of coals and the effect of some added substances were discussed. Moreover, qualitative research about the beginning state of reaction and the by-product were carried out.
