Although Petroleum Coke is very important carbon raw material as in high purity in industry, Petroleum Coking Process has not developed and improved for coke production but rather for conversion of petroleum residues to more valuable distillate products in U.S.A.Especially since catalytic cracking for increasing of gasoline production improved to very sufficient process as TCC or FCC, coking process has become more important to ensure enogh feed stock to them.
But in Japan, residual fuel oil has further bigger part in all fuel requirements and their realizations than U.S.A., then petroleum coking process which convert heavy residnal fuels to lighter stocks is generally very difficult to pay out in economics and to get good product balances.
Therefore Petroleum Coking in Japan should be planned to produce high price, good quality petroleum coke which would be able to be competitive to American Coke, and at the same time we should ensure suitable crude oil for it, because composition and character of feed stock are, without doubt, prime factors in determining not only the qualities of coke but also the overall economics of the Coking Process. The highest recognization of Petroleum coke will be to utilize it as raw material for synthetic graphite electrode which will be high price but require high purity and low thermal expansion.
In Japan, we have now only one Petrolium Delayed type Coking Unit at Koa Oil Co., producing superior quality coke as imported, and have a plan to make it double capacity in near future and to produce about 50% of total low sulfer coke requirement in Japan.
