The use of undeveloped resources, such as terrestrial heat which is called “The Fousth Fire”, is considered to be of great importance for Japan which has only small energy resources in the country.
The commercial geothermal power stations operating now in Jopan are only two, one is Matsukawa, Japan Heavy Chemical Co., which started the operation in Oct. 1966 and the other is Otake, Kyushu Electric Power Co., which started in Aug. 1967. While the obtained operational experiences are net enough, there are steadily growing inchinations for the development of the terrestrial heat as shown by, for instance, Onikobe, Electric Power Development Co. and Ha-chimandyra, Mitsubishi Metal Mining Co. As compared with general power plants, geothermal power plants have many in herent aspects. In addition, the mixture of steam and hot water causes a different kind of operational problems to Otake, while super heated steam at Matsukawa.
