    Intermitted combustion type of engines such as spark ignition-engines, compression ignition engines and rotary engines, will be mainly used at least during this century for automobile use.
    Petrol series of modified fuels will be also used. But some alcohol series fuels may be become to be used, and even in the so called hydrogen fuel age, they might be used for automobile use.

    Industrial furnaces play an important role in view of the energy consumption.
    In this article, possible steps to conserve energy in combustion furnaces are discussed, then several explorative suggestions from the standpoint of furnace design are presented.
    In this decade, industrial furnaces have been remarkably improved, however in the trend of recent development of it, heat efficiency has not been always regarded as the first important subject. The writer starts out an analysis of the present furnace situation caused theredy, then discusses available measures which could be taken for energy conservation in furnaces and finally attempts some proposal in regard to the orientation of future developments as it ought to be. As for average means, recovery and reuse of waste heat from furnaces as well as decrease of wall heat loss by better and more carefully designed insulation, are effective.
    Subjects which should be considered as matters of greater importance are basic furnace design, consisting of optimum heating rate, furnace profile line and proper furnace selection which meets production line requirements.
    This is the time for us furnace engineers to frankly review the above in order to approach better energy conservative furnaces.
    Finally, the the themes which should de seriously considered as future tasks are as follows:
    Means to reduce energy consumption without affecting product quality or performance. Second, compatibilty of fuel economy and antipollution strategy, and then, an integrated counter-plan for energy saving, which includes not only fuel but every utility and resource such as electricity, water and consumable furnace components.

    In the domestic gas appliances, there seems to be two ways to conserve energy.
    One is to increase the efficiency of the applianes and the other is to synthesize the energy systems of the domestic appliances, not only the gas appliances but also the electric ones.
    Thc former, to increase the efficiency of the appliances has a tendency to increase energy to produce the appliances, so it is expected little. On the contrary, the latter, to synthesize the appliances has a great possiaility to decrease the energy consumption in our daily life. This is often called total energy system.
    In this report, the comparisn between the gas appliances and the electric ones is tried from the view point of the energy conservation and the total energy system that is now being developed in Tokyo Gas Co. is explained also.

    Synthetic crude oil produced from coal, oil shale, and tar sand has been spot-lighted since the energy crisis.
    This article is a brief review of mining technology of these materials which are different in the geological occurencee and the development procedures.

    Fundamental studies on thermal cracking have deen done to get low-sulfur fuels from petroleum residue.
    Vacuum bottom and propane deasphalten were converted with batch reactor to gases, oil and coke in the temperature range of 500°C-800°C.
    As the temperature rose, the coke yield decreased and the liquid yield increased sharply up to 700°C, and they scarcely changed above 700°C. Gas yield increased slightly as the temperature rose.
    Sulfur yield showed the same tendency with the product distribution, but sulfur yield to gas did not change above 600°C.
    CaO, MgO and dolomite were added to the feed stock and they reacted with H2S during the reaction. Among them, CaO was found to be the best effective desulffurizer at 800°C.
