    Many drop-size measuring method have been performed up to date. Illustrative explanations about them are made and the problems on each method are described.
    The methods are divided into two kinds. In the first one, whole droplets of spray are sampled to get mean droplet diameter or size distribution. Sedimentation method, molten wax and freezing method, optical method and electrical method are included in this first kind. Measuring apparatuses of these methods become, in general, complex and large in scale.
    Direct photography, inpression method and immersion liquid method are those in the second kind. In these method, sampled values have to be transformed into those of whole spray which requires some troublesome procedrures. As the immersion liquid method is relatively simple and easy, it is most popular now, but detailed considerations on it show us many difficulties and problems to get a correct droplet size.
    It could be said that every method has its own problems to be solved and we have no method completely correct and reliable yet.

    According to the statistics made in fiscal 1970, 84. 69 million people, equivalent to 82. 5% of the total population of 103. 72million are benefitited by the municipal services of refuse disposal.
    In the services of wastes disposal 76% of the total quantity of refuse is handled directly by the municipal personnel (those employed by municipalities).
    As the direction of refuse treatment in our country, utilization of landfilling to the full extent shall be taken up as the final disposal after intermediate processing. The incineration processing is one of the most important methods and shall be further improved. Again, highspeed compost processing has been conducted as the means of resource recycling, but as the demand for compost is rather low, its share is decreasing.
    Due to the Oil Crisis last year, however, it seems to have been more important for our country to reuse wastes than ever.

    After 10 years speedy postwar reconstruction and nearly 20 years of very economical growth, Japan seems to be deadlocked by probleme of emergy and environment. Over 70 percent of Japanese land is mountaneous regions. Therefore, for example, her energy consumption per unit area of flat land is approximately 10 times that of the United States.
    To build new plants in Japan is increasingly difficult. The difficulty can not be be resolved completely by seeking vacant lots in foreign countries. In other words, certain plants should continue to be built in Japan.
    Consequently, to construct and operate pollution free plants became extremely important. Closed system plants are difined as such pollution free plants.

    Fundamental studies on thermal cracking at low temperature have been done to get low-sulfur fuels from petroleum residue.
    Heavy oil is converted to gases, oil and coke in the temperature range of 450°C-600°C. Maximum yield of oil is 68.9% at 500°C, and total yield of oil and n-pentane extracts from coke decrease sharply with the rise of temperature. At 500°C, sulfur content of oil is 3.72% and the sulfur distribution to gas as H2S is 11.7%. The influenence of reflux is more remarkable at 550°C than at 500°C.
    CaO added to the feed stock reacts with H2S according to the following reaction CaO+H2S=CaS+H2O, and then it remover sulfus in the form of CaS.

    There have been many new developments concerning the studies on the pyrolysis of plastic wastes. Our investigation was that the plastic wastes were converted into the fuel oil or monomers of plastics. The plant was consisted essentially of a steel tube with a single screw and an electric furnace, a condensing and scrubbing train for the product recovery, and gas-metering and sampling devices.
    The experiments in which the high boiling point oil (or residne) in the pyrolysis products or waste lubricating oil were mixed with the waste plastics and then pyrolized at 400-600°C were carried out. We called this process the solvent method. The following results were obtained.
    This solvent method was well suited to the thermal decomposition of polyolefins or polystyrene and the manufacture of gasoous fuel and fuel oil or the monomer of of plastics. The gaseous product in the pyrolysis of polyolefins at 500-57°C showed about 10-35wt% yields and it contained olefins at 60-80wt%. In the case of polystyrene, about 50-70wt% of styrene were recovered as monomer. The higher boiling oils were been able to recycle to the feed of pyrolysis as solvent.

    The way to treat the increasing industrial wastes and sewage emission are now a big problem for environment Preservation.
    Among these industrial wastes, sludges are the second in volume, next to the dusts and ashes so far.
    Especially, the organics contained in the sludge should be decomposed into stable compounds by incineration or pyrolysis. And there, the poisonous materials decomposed or produced through the sludge incineration must be kept away from the environmental pollution.
    On this point of view, this paper introduces the investigation with the pilot plant on the sludge incineration contaminated with heavy metals.
    The results show us some behaviors of poisonous gases and heavy metals exper-imentally.
