    1. The international situation of new technical development for utilizing coal including coal watar slurry is undergoing a change as we see in the IEA's proposal for holding a workshop and the Fifth National Energy Policy Plan of DOE of the U.S.
    2. Japan is currently confronted with a harsh environmental change, but promotion of supply and utilization of coal is still an important question of national magnitude.
    3. It is necessary to bring out the potential of coal by establishing new utilization technology for the smooth development of supply and utilization of coal. Particularly, the coal water slurry technology aims at securing an advantage over conventional bulk handling of coal and promotion of overall economics, and an early establishment of the technology is most expected. The industry's desire for the technical development is increasing, and fostering of such desire is an important task of the administration. A new development is requested to be considered by the administration such as promotion of technical evaluation in addition to build up of usual assistance measures.
    4. Trial preparation of a handy technical evaluation table about coal water slurry technology provided a better understanding of many special features. Making detailed evaluation on each business project in each country in the future has a great significance from a veiewpoint of development and introduction of the optimum technology.
    5. Preparation and utilization of public data base contribute to the improvement in research efficiency besides promotion of technical evaluation as a means of strengthening the basis for new utilization technology development, and it is also considered to be an important task. Preferential tax treatments have been enforced for the coal water slurry preparation facilities to promote commercialization, but in addition, low-interest financing should be studied.
    The coal water slurry technology will mature if both the government and the people endeavor to build up the foundation, aiming to make new developments, bearing in mind that the coal water slurry technology increases the added value of energy.

    The recent increase in interests on the coal utilization technology has brought about the various research of coal slurry preparation, transportation and combustion. In this article, the recent developments for the measurements of physical properties of Coal-Water mixture (CWM) will be reviewed. The physical properties means viscosity, thermal conductivity, specific heat, density and zeta potential of CWM. Stability of coal slurries will be discussed comparing with the thixotropic characteristics.
    It is necessary to predict relationships between pressure drop and CWM flow rate in the design of pipeline transportation systems based on the experimental results in a laboratory. Flow characteristic data obtained from pilot-plant experiments are compared with the rheometrical data. The comparison indicates that laboratory rheometry data enable us to design pipeline transportation. The correlation of heat transfer data for CWM in a laminar tube flow will be also discussed.

    Carbon slurry has been utilized for many industries. For their purposes, it is important to produce a well carbon dispersion in media. In this article, We describe fundamental aspects for obtaining a well dispersion of solid particles and discuss the results of coal slurry by using surfactants which have been studied in our laboratory.

    Combustion of coal slurry fuels are discussed and reviewed. Basically, the combustion life time of a coal slurry droplet is under the control of residual agglomerates combustion period, and dispersion medias are classified into adhesive and non adhesive media on the basis of which they generate residual char or coke as the adhesion paste or not.
    The burnout time of coal slurry fuels is discussed by using the single droplet combustion behaviour of each slurries, also burning characteristics are discussed through fundamental research results.
    From the point of view of total burning time, the atomisation is an important technology for improving the combustion. Recent works on the slurry atomisation is reviewed. Also, problems on the coal slurry combustion within a practical furnace are described.

    Coal slurry technology has been developed in order to dissolve the demerit of bulk handling and promote the utilization of coal since the Oil Crisis. Recently, this technology has been watched with much interests as an alternate fuel. Especially, CWM (highly Loaded Coal Water Mixture) is considered as one of the promising coal slurry technologies in future, because it is economical and easy to utilize.
    Electric Power Development Company (EPDC) has started the development of CWM technology since 1980. After the fundamental test, 1.5t/h CWM preparation pilot plant test was started in 1983.
    The following techniques have been developed by EPDC.
    1. Save the pulverizing energy by two stage preparation system.
    2. Estimation of coal slurriability.
    3. Effect of dispersant to slurry.
    4. Stabilization method of CWM and estimation of CWM stability.
    In U.S.A. and Sweden, the development has been started earlier than us. Now the big projects are going on in Canada, USSR and Italy.
    These projects are explained briefly.

    From the view point of practical use, application of coal slurry for utility boiler is discussed as the following.
    1. Application status of various kinds of coal slurry is introduced. COM and CWM are more suitable for utility application than others.
    2. Operating condition of commercialized COM is introduced summarily . Problem of scale up, effect of trace elements and risk of commercialization should be considered when coal slurry is put in practical use.
    3. Results of 75MW CWM full combustion demonstration test are reported . Technology of CWM in power station has already grown up to practical use . As large amount of qualified CWM is consumed in a utility boiler, it is necessary to make preparation technology matured in near future.
    4. The direction of CWM application in Japan is studied under the circumstance of low oil price and of low electric power demand growth.

    Since the latter half of 1970's, the developments of new fuels derived from coal have been ivestigated. And till now, many coal slurry fuels were developed. Some of them have been produced commercially.
    At present, the four countries, Sweden, United States, Canada and Japan, promote the commercially-developed coal slurry fuels as oil substitutions.
    This paper refers to the situations of the industrial use of the coal slurry fuels in these countries.

    Coal-Methanol-Slurry (CMS) is a new fuel composed of coal pulverized in a suitable particle size and methanol. The Mitui Coal Fluidization Consortium (MCFC) established in 1980 by 19 companies of the Mitsui group, has been developing CMS as a new alternative fuel to oil.
    MCFC has exercised various tests which are supposed to relate to all elements in technologies necessary for the utilization of a large volume of CMS in the future . Favorable results are being obtained through these tests and many factors in relation to various phenomena are being clarified.
    The results presented in this paper are based upon tests on such facilities as for producing, transportation, storage and combustion of CMS and methanol separation from CMS.

    The Japanes e patents on coal slurry fuel were investigated for the trend of coal slurry technology.
    The number of patents was 106 for coal oil mixture, 354 for coal water mixture, 27 for system and elemental technology on coal slurry.
    The mainly patents on coal slurry were coal water mixture, Which were involved 262 patents on surface active agents and 225 patents on preparation technology of slurry.

    Coal Oil Mixture (COM) was put in commercial operation in November 1984 at Yokosuka Thermal Station. In this paper, COM facilities and Flue Gas Treatment System of COM combustion are introduced . Operational experience is also discussed.
    Required COM specification and issues taken into concideration in facility aspect in commercialization are as follows.
