Incandescent lamps were invented approximately 130 years ago, and the most intelligent brains of the Europe, US, and Japan worked on incandescent lamp improvements and new product developments. As a result, incandescent lamps came to dominate mainstream illumination systems. Although new light sources such as fluorescent lamps have emerged since then, incandescent lamps have been used everywhere in the world to this day for the unique warm color of their light, and for the cozy feeling they create that people associate with candles and kerosene lamps. However, the 130 year history of incandescent lamps is now coming to an close, due to the significant mission of global warming prevention. From a historical perspective, we are now entering an era of innovation that arrives approximately once every 60 years. It is the dawn of an era of LED illumination that takes advantage of solid-state lighting, which is different from combustion- or electrical-discharge-based lighting. Brilliant researchers and engineers are now starting to work on improvements and refinements of LED lights, the same way their predecessors did 130 years ago. The world will soon be illuminated by the glow of LEDs. This article gives an overview of the history of the incandescent lamp in Japan, and introduces the history of various technologies that supported the development of incandescent lamps.
Filament bulbs have a variety of applications such as interior and exterior of a car, pachinko and pachislot, illminations and other products without bulbs for general lighting which will go out of prodution since 2010.
Incandescent lamp, which has been produced for more than 100 years, will be disused in some countries for measure against global warming. Japan also indicated that they would exchange all of incandescent lamp for energy saving-lamp by 2012. The domestic companies for lighting announced that they would stop producing incandescent lamp from 2010 to 2012, too. In future, lighting will change to energy saving lamp, like fluorescent lamp or LED light bulb.
In the past in which Edison invented the electric lamp, the human had worked below the daylight, and took the meal and rested under the burn light in the night over one billion several years. Therefore, the human senses the color of foods illuminated by the burn light in the palatable color and the burn light is "comfortable light" by which the mind and the body are cured. The quality of light of the incandescent lamp is the homogeneity in the burn light. It is studied, in this paper, that the microcavity light source and the cluster light source are expected as light sources where luminous efficacy and lifetime are equal to the fluorescent lamp.
Illumination design is a job that is related to culture, and forms the bridge between illumination theories on civilization and illumination theories on culture. As a result of rapid developments in illumination technology, new light sources such as LEDs are now attracting attention, and the many calls for the elimination of incandescent lamps have led to a rather alarming situation. In illumination design, various types of light sources should be used in coordination to take advantage of their unique characteristics. In this sense, LEDs and incandescent lamps are light sources that should co-exist even in the future. In illumination design, what is more important than anything else is having the mindset to learn from natural lighting.
