Lighting added a special value and symbolism to this new water tower on hilltop of Cherbourg, a port town in Normandy, France. Designed by Atelier Lab, lit by I.C.O.N., its unique shape in clear concrete surface was excellent captor of floodlighting. As it's visible from entire town and the ocean, Cherbourg Urban Community expected it to be "the urban beacon" for town and for modern residential neighborhood under construction in the same sector. Respecting different aspect and neighbor's ambiance, the ocean side and the landside of the tower have contrasted lighting expressions. Combination of LED and metal halide projectors enables to create various appearances such as color lighting that changes color according to the day of the week, and three-dimensional light and shadow effects on the hollows on the surface. The city mayor, many local VIP and journalists gathered at the opening ceremony where special citation was given to the success of lighting design. Entire energy covered by solar panels.
