This report describes backgrounds to the establishement of "Committee on Interaction between Road and Vehicle Lighting on the Road", reviews research papers regarding effect of integrated condition with road and vehicle lighting on dirver's visibility, and proposes a new road lighting design using probeam lighting system on the road. Road lighting is designed to promote visibility withour refrence to vehicle lighting. Vehicle lighting is designed to provide visibility in the absence of road lighting. While optimaization of interaction between road and vehicle lighting, it is at present unachievable because there is insufficient information on thir combined effets. Based on these results, it is necessary to develop innovation technology regarding road lighting system to contribute to better safe and comfort road space at night.
Under current standards, the visibility evaluation of road objects by road lighting, inverse silhouette view is not considered. In addition, it is actually difficult to measure the performance index indicating the visibility of the installed road lighting. LED is widely used as an illumination source, instruments having various light distribution has been developed. However, as traffic safety facilities, and both the overall visibility and energy-saving lighting equipment, it is necessary to develop techniques to measure easily and accurately the road surface luminance. In this paper on these issues, from the point of view of "theory" and "measurement technology", I will introduce the latest technology that is research and development towards the current practical use.
In this paper, in the beginning, efforts of ITS aimed at reduction of traffic accidents are introduced. Then, it is commentary sprinkled with examples on the progress of the automobile society due to the spread of safe driving support system and automatic operation system and automobile and infrastructure of information exchange and ultra-compact mobility. It is important to support the view secure in operation driver for safe driving at night. In relation to development of headlamp technology for performing this support, examples of the development of the illumination source and the headlamp technology is introduced.
This section describes standards of road lighting and the technical trends of road and tunnel lighting with their transitions. Road lighting involves continuous illumination, intersection, pedestrian crossing and tollgate. The luminaire arrangement of road lighting has been designed by silhouette vision generally. There is a potential for improvement of traffic safety when we design including reverse-silhouette vision and use LED.
The control of the lighting control became easy for the road light and the head light by becoming it light emitting diode. Therefore the possibility that I can realize various systems rises. In this report, I suggest a car and lighting cooperation system plan of the road based on a technical trend (an ITS technology, visibility evaluation technology, in-vehicle preventive safety technique, head light) surrounding a car and road. The thing which must wait for the evolution of the further technique was included to realize the cooperation system plan that I introduced, but showed future vision.
