In the Philippines, the rapid and ever-increasing rate of soilerosion, especially in the uplands and hilly areas, has aroused great concern. Several strategies, either existing or developed, have been used to try to preventor slow down the degradation process. One such strategy is agroforestry. One of the most important roles of agroforestry is the minimization of surfacerunoff, soil erosion, and nutrient loss. Several agroforestry systems adoptedin various parts of the country are indigenous or age-old practices whichinclude rice terracing, rotation agroforestry, and multistory systems. Others, such as alley cropping, were developed to enable planting along contours onloping areas.
However, it is apparent that continued research and intensive informationdissemination is necessary. Moreover, the cooperation of all parties, especially farmers, is important in order to achieve agricultural and ecological sustainabilitythrough agroforestry.
This report aims to document and review the importance of agroforestrysystems in ameliorating soil conservation problems in the Philippines.
