Increasing cold gas efficiency (CGE) of low-temperature gasification considering the configuration of triple-bed combined circulating fluidized bed (TBCFB) gasifier that involves steam gasification is critically important to reduce CO2 emission from power plants. In this study, the TBCFB gasification process was simulated with a commercial process simulator Aspen Plus®. From heat balance calculation between pyrolyser and gasifier (endothermic reactions), and riser (exothermic reaction) and regenerated steam from steam turbines injected into the gasifier, we found that maximum achievable CGE is 95.7% when char conversion ratio in the gasifier is 37.44% at 800 °C.

To understand the degradation of coke with CO2 and H2O gasification, changes in coke structure and coke strength by CO2 and H2O gasification were investigated. In the reaction with CO2, the number of pore voxels in the whole of a coke sample increased. On the other hand, in the reaction with H2O, the number of pore voxels on the external surface of a coke sample mainly increased. The strength of a coke sample after CO2 gasification decreased more than that of H2O. These results suggest that the degradation of coke with gasification differs between CO2 and H2O.

Coal-fired power plants, which provide stable power at low cost, will continue to serve as base load supporting the world’s increasing power demands. However, the amount of CO2 emitted by coal utilization is larger than that of other fossil fuels. Therefore the Osaki CoolGen Project has been launched to realize innovative HELE (High Efficiency, Low Emissions) coal-fired power generation which combines an Integrated coal Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) / Integrated coal Gasification Fuel Cell combined cycle (IGFC) with CO2 capture. This project is subsidized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (until 2015 FY) and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (from 2016 FY). Demonstration testing of the oxygen-blown IGCC which is the base technology for IGFC commenced in March 2017. We achieved world-class net efficiency and environmental performance. Construction of CO2 capture unit started in April 2018 is now underway to start demonstration test.

To use a three towers circulating fluidized bed (CFB) facility, Ca looping coal gasification experiment have been performed. The three towers CFB facility mainly contained by three reactors, the air combustion reactor (AR), the coal gasifier (CR) and the volatile reformer (VR) . The coal was continuously supplied and the feeding rate was about 1.4 - 4.8kg/h,
The product gases from VR were about 49 % H2, 21% CO, 13% CO2, 4.5 %CH4, with N2 balance, no tar was contained in the product gases.

The igntion test was carried out in order to verify the ignition characteristics of pulverized coal under pressurized O2/CO2 atmosphere and to investigate the operability of pressurized O2/CO2 gasification system. The ignition delay was increased when total pressure increased and change gas composition from O2/N2 to O2/CO2 atmosphere. In O2/CO2 atmosphere, the highest temperature after ignition decreased due to higher heat capacity than O2/N2. However, the drop of temperature by O2/CO2 atmosphere can be recovered by increasing O2 concentration.

Addition of calcium takes an important role in trace elements leaching mechanism. The application of paper sludge ashes as the additives in controlling the leaching of trace elements indicated satisfying effect. In the previous study, PS ash 3 could suppress the arsenic, selenium and boron leaching concentration simultaneously from a coal fly ash, then calcium oxide consisting in PS Ash 3 considered as the calcium compounds that affected the leaching mechanisms. So that, this study aims to verify the effect of suppressing material in leaching mechanism by the addition another kind of paper sludge ashes into two different coal fly ashes. PS ash 8 as the single additives and the mixture of PS Ash 8 with blast furnace cement (BFC) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) as the mixture additives have been tested into coal fly ash C and coal fly ash H. The result from ICP-AES analysis, ion chromatography, analysis, XRF analysis and pH meter determined that the mixture additive is more applicable in the decreasing of leaching As, Se, B and F from coal fly ashes.

Coal fly ash is a product of the combustion process in a coal-fired power plant. This process produces amounts of coal fly ash, which in fact contains As and Se. These trace elements could be leached out into the environment when contact with the rainfall after dumped into the landfill. Therefore, leaching of the trace elements in coal fly ash has to be controlled. This research provides information about what kind of calcium compound which effects to decreasing As and Se leaching concentration. Nine kinds of paper sludge ashes (PS ash 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11) have been tested into Fly Ash C (FA C). Based on ICP-AES measurement each paper sludge ash has the different effect in controlling these elements. In order to know the kind of calcium compound in paper sludge ashes which most affecting, thermal gravimetric (TG) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP-AES) have been used to determine percentage of CaO, CaCO3 and Ca(OH)2.

2017年4月、政府は国内ガス市場の完全自由化を行い、今後も、既存事業者、潜在的参入者、およびガス仲介業者の間の競合進展が予想される。この規制変更を受け、国内だけでなく、ガスの調達を行う上流の市場を取り込んだ経済分析及び議論も必要だろう。そこで本研究では、シンプルな経済学モデルを使って上下流の垂直的な逐次モデルを構築し、国内市場が独占から競争に移行することで変化する国内、国外のガス価格および国内外の余剰(利益)変化について分析した。その結果、競争化は国内価格を低下させるが余剰は増えず、輸入価格は低下しない可能性、さらに上流生産者の余剰増大の可能性が示唆された。

International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 372 combines two research topics: slow slip events in subduction areas and actively deforming gas hydrate-bearing landslides on Hikurangi Margin off the east coast of the north island of New Zealand. On Exp. 372, we conducted coring at one site (U1517) in the Tuaheni Landslide Complex and LWD at three sites (U1518, 1519, 1520) for subduction area aboard the R/V JOIDES Resolution from 26th November in 2017 to 4th January in 2018. We could core some gas hydrate layers, according to the chlorinity profile and core temperature measurement from U1517, gas hydrate saturation was 2-68% at 130-170mbsf.

Methane hydrate exists in the sand-mud alternate layers of Japan’s offshore turbidite sediments. In recent years, the methane hydrate is considered as a new energy resources. For economic feasibility, enhanced production techniques will be needed. Hydraulic fracturing is considered about one of the well stimulation to apply the methane hydrate reservoirs. However, there is little information about tensile strength of the methane hydrate, and it is difficult to make modeling the hydraulic fracturing for methane hydrate reservoirs. In this research, we carried out experimental study to measure the tensile strength of methane hydrate.

In order to improve the gas recovery rate from the gas hydrate reservoir, secondary recovery by thermal stimulation method aimed at recovering the temperature inside the reservoir is being considered. The heating method by acidic water injection is a new heat stimulation method proposed by us and enhances dissociation of hydrate by utilizing the heat generation by mineral dissolution in the reservoir due to acidic water injection. In the hydrate dissociation experiment by acidic water injection, the production enhancement effect by the inhibitor effect is clarified. Moreover, the influence of the heat generation effect was confirmed.

Gas hydrate surrounds hydrocarbon molecules with a cage structure consisting of water molecules. When vibration is applied to the cage structure given by UHF to microwave irradiation, the basket is break by the energy, because, gas hydrate is in the metastable energy states. It is like pushing a balloon with a needle. Artificial butane hydrate models revealed that the temperature raised with small energy than expected. The complex permittivity measurements were also conducted on water, ice and butane hydrates. The hydrate concentration showed intermediate between water and ice. The existence of hydrate is strongly involved in microwave absorption in the low temperature range. A hypothesis will be proposed that microwave perturbation break the cage structure of the clathrate hydrate and that the enthalpy difference between the destroyed subsumed hydrate and the ice structure has changed into heat.

We study the formation or melting process of tetrahydrofuran (THF) clathrate hydrate from polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), anti-freeze protein TYPE I, TYPE III, and polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) aqueous solution as a function of growth rate V and adsorbed KHIs concentration c using the unidirectional growth technique. We have already reported the evaluation method for growth inhibition performance of KHIs for the clathrate hydrate–aqueous solution system. This study aims to evaluate various type of KHI performances on THF hydrate crystals.

Supported metallic nickel catalyst is often used for CO2 dry reforming of methane (DRM), because of its relatively inexpensive cost and high activity. In this study, endothermic DRM combined with exothermal partial oxidation of methane (POM) is investigated over highly dispersed Ni/SiO2 catalysts. A highly dispersed Ni/SiO2 catalyst was prepared via impregnation of Ni-EDTA complex (denoted as NiE/SiO2). For comparison, A Ni/SiO2 catalysts was also prepared via conventional impregnation of Ni(NO3)2 aqueous solution (denoted as Ni/SiO2). The catalysts were characterized by XRD, TPR, TEM, TG and tested using CH4, CO2, O2 (8:6:1) flow at 750 °C. NiE/SiO2 exhibited excellent performance and long lifetime due to highly dispersed nickel particles bound onto silica gel strongly.

We have analyzed to improve the efficiency of biogas power generation and have found out the necessity of high heat exchange SOFC system. When treating 10 Nm-3 of biogas methane, at least 59 kW K-1 of heat exchange performance for positive profit is needed. We approached by a reactor development, and it is clarified that a plate reactor exceeded this target value, i.e. 78-173 kW K-1. The heat exchange performance cannot be achieved with conventional tubular reactors, and the high reaction performance in the methane dry reforming was also confirmed.

In this study, gas absorption behavior of TBAB semi-clathrate hydrate slurry was investigated in bubble column reactor. The absorption rate of CO2 into hydrate slurry increased rapidly as soon as the slurry and gas contacted. It was found that CO2 absorption behavior does not change even with CO2/N2 mixed gas. The separation efficiency did not depend on the flow rate in the bubble tower column reactor because the contact time was equivalent.

Hydrate-based gas separation is often investigated with using batch or semi-batch operations. In order to increase the throughput of gas mixture without increasing the apparatus volume, it is necessary to perform a continuous operation of hydrate-based gas separation. In this study, we combined a hydrate-decomposition with a hydrate-formation apparatus or continuous operation. By trial and error approach, an apparent overall heat transfer coefficient of the combined system with using water as a fluid was estimated in the presence of bubbles and under pressure. In addition, the apparent heat transfer coefficient involving hydrate formation was also estimated under SDS solution condition.

This paper reports an experimental study of CO2 + N2 mixed gas separation based on tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB) hydrates with TBAB aqueous solution of 40 mass%. The composition of a mixed gas simulated flue gas is CO2 : N2 = 0.15 : 0.85. We used a high-pressure cell having 800 cm3 inner volume for hydrate formation. We used three different pressure levels: 1, 3 and 5 MPa with 2.5 K of subcooling temperatures. We analyzed the gas compositions in gas phase before and after the hydrate formation by a gas chromatograph and calculated the gas compositions in hydrate phase. The CO2 mole fractions in hydrate phase were higher in lower pressure conditions, i.e., 0.40–0.45 with 1 and 3 MPa and 0.30 with 5 MPa. The results suggest that TBAB hydrates have a tendency to form tetragonal and orthorhombic structures at low and high pressure conditions, respectively.

Utilizing unused thermal energy is one way to prevent global warming, and thermal storage technology has attracted much attention. One candidate of thermal storage materials is a semiclathrate hydrate. Choosing a guest molecule determines the equilibrium temperature of semiclathrate hydrates. One of the effective tools to measure the equilibrium temperature as well as the enthalpy change of phase transition is a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). We measured the equilibrium liquidus temperatures in a semiclathrate hydrate system with two different methods: direct phase equilibrium observation and DSC. In this presentation, based on the comparison of both data, we will discuss how to determine an equilibrium liquidus temperature as well as a eutectic temperature from a DSC curve.

Clathrate hydrate of tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB) is expected as a cold storage material for air conditioning, but supercooling is a problem. For visualization of the supercooling phenomenon, both the microstructure of TBAB clathrate hydrate and TBAB aqueous solution were observed by freeze fracture replica method. In the decomposition and formation processes, the generation and disappearance of the clusters were found to be explained as a significant step for the phase change. In addition, the relationship between thermal behavior, solution structure, and hysteresis phenomenon (so-called memory effect) was investigated and it was found that the memory effect can be explained by cluster generation. Further, as a cross check, structure evaluation in TBAB aqueous solution was carried out by X-ray scattering method and mutual complementary results were obtained.

The viscosities of TBAB SCH slurry were measured using rotational viscometer to investigate agglomeration. These results were analysed with Herschel-Bulkley’s model. The diameter of primary particle and behavior index decreased with decreasing temperature. This indicates that the agglomeration of primary particles is promoted at lower temperature.

Large molecules such as 2-methylbutane (C5H12) or 2,2-dimethylbutane (C6H14) form structure H (sH) hydrates with methane (CH4) as a help gas. In this study, the Raman spectra of the C–H symmetric stretch region of CH4 enclathrated within various sH hydrates and structure I CH4 hydrates were analyzed in the temperature range of 83–183 K. Thermal expansions of these sH hydrate samples were also measured using powder X-ray diffraction. Symmetric stretch vibrational frequencies of CH4 in host water cages increased because of varying temperature, and the sizes of host water cages also increased; variation of CH4 in small cages was less than in larger cages. Comparing the variations of the C–H symmetric stretching frequencies of CH4 in gas hydrates with varying pressure and temperature, we suggest that the observed trend is caused by thermal vibrations of the CH4 molecule in water cages.

Maruyama et al. have proposed an innovative low CO2 emission power generation system based on recovery of methane hydrates 1). During the hydrate dissociation process, occupancy (θ) in each cage (θM or θS) changes based on degree of progress for dissociation of methane hydrates. For analyzing relative cage occupancies (θM/θS), Raman spectroscopy is being used as an in-situ technique to determine methane hydrate dissociation characteristics. In this work, the changes in the relative cage occupancy ratio (3θM/θS) in the methane hydrates were monitored experimentally at an equilibrium conditions. Model calculations agreed well with the experimental data. The cage occupancy ratio in the methane hydrates decreased as increasing pressure due to increase in the amount of methane stored in the S-cage. Measuring the 3θM/θS values under the dissociation process can be important knowledge to develop a kinetic model considering mass transfer of methane from the solid structures.

In this work, the objective was to investigate the decomposition phenomena in methane hydrate (MH) under depressurization condition. A two stages decomposition model is proposed that considers the diffusion phenomena and the cage occupancy, which was applied to analyze the mass transport at the interface of methane hydrate (MH). A heat balance during a decomposition of MH was analyzed with a lumped capacitance model. The temperature of MH was decreased to freezing point during a decomposition of MH even at 2 MPa. Namely, the heat transfer in two stages decomposition model is very important to evaluate the methane gas production rate from MH.

We employed Terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to observe a phase transition of methane hydrate. The optical parameter and dielectric constants of the methane hydrate are similar to that of ice at the same condition in THz frequency. An increase of the optical parameter with the increase of the frequency and temperature was observed in the equilibrium area. Whereas the methane hydrate shows small absorption below 200 K, a large increase of the absorption coefficient was observed around 260 K. This fact implies that an existence of the supercooled water which plays an important role during methane hydrtate dissociation. The terahertz study has a potential to reveal unknown properties and find new facts for gas hydrate studies.

Ethanol molecules are usually used as a thermodynamic inhibitor for the formation of clathrate hydrates. However, the ethanol molecules are also known as the guest substance and the mechanism of the cage formation with such hydrophilic guest substances are not clear. To reveal the effect of the guest-host hydrogen bonds on the formation of the cages, we performed molecular dynamics simulation of ethanol-CO2 clathrate hydrates. As results, the enclathration of the ethanol molecules in the cages are observed and the growth ratio were depending on the fraction of ethanol molecules. Also the dynamics of the cage formation was analyzed.

The crystal structure of tetra-n-butylammonium chloride (TABC) semiclathrate hydrate is affected by the synthesis condition (especially concentration of the TBAC solutions). Two samples of TBAC semiclathrate hydrate and methane TBAC semiclathrate hydrate, essentially having tetragonal structure-I (TS-I), were prepared. The temperature dependence of powder diffraction patterns for these samples revealed growth of unknown peaks above 263 K. These unknown peaks indicate a different from TS-I. Furthermore, this crystal structure of main phase is similar to TS-1, but the Rietveld analysis clarified that the main phase also has an atomic arrangement different from the result of the previous study. Therefore, it seems that various crystal structures exist as TBAC semiclathrate hydrate. Further study on crystal structure is necessary from now on.

Clathrate hydrates are inclusion compounds comprising hydrogen-bonded hydrate-cage structures with guest molecules. Tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB) is a typical ionic guest molecule capable of forming semiclathrate hydrates. TBAB hydrates are stable below ~286 K, have relatively high latent heats (190–220 J g–1), and can entrap small gas molecules (such as CO2 and CH4) under milder conditions. The physical and chemical properties of TBAB hydrates as phase change materials (PCMs) in cold and thermal energy storages are studied by several research groups. In this study, the hydration numbers and dissociation enthalpies of TBAB hydrate crystals formed from TBAB aqueous solutions with 0.6–3.6 mol% were investigated by ion chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry.

TBAB (tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide) hydrate formed from TBAB•26H2O semiclathrate crystal has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Raman spectroscopy. The Raman spectrum is different from ones in TBAB•26H2O and TBAB•38H2O. DSC result shows that the melting temperature is 12.9°C which is higher than the other TBAB semiclathrate hydrates. These results imply that different crystal is formed from solid TBAB•26H2O semiclathrate crystal.

Mass produciton of sweetpotatoes under weak lighting condion was studied by cultivating at the unused spaces of solar power station. About 36% solar light intensity was enough to increase yield of sweetpotatoes by the bag cultivating method and the yield increased to 6.6 kg/m2, which was 275% of the domestic average.

High moisture content of organic matter drying experiment with the drying accelerator was conducted,and the effect of drying the accelerator addition the kind on drying rate and was evaluated.In the experiment,drying the accelerator was added to sludge 0-2%,and the weight decrease of the sludge samples and the sludge surface temperature during drying the process are monitored.The drying rate of the sludge improves and constant-rate period of drying becomes long by adding the drying accelerator. Predicting cold flow properties of biodiesel is difficult when more than two types of monoglyceride (MG) are included in biodiesel. Interactions between diferent types of MG might be of importance to establish a practical prediction model. Hence, solid-liquid equilibrium (SLE) of MGs was investigated in this study. Melting temperatures of binary mixtures of MGs were measured in various ratios by using differential scanning calorimetry. Two prediction models (solid solution model and non-solid solution model) were then applied to characterize the experimental result. It was found that the SLE behavior highly depends on the type of MGs. Some deviations were found between the predicted value and experimental result and it may be caused by non-ideality in solid phase.

A new reaction route of producing hydrocarbons from unsaturated fatty acid, oleic acid, was proposed as a renewable gasoline through oxidative cleavage followed by decarboxylation. Under the conditions of 1.0 wt% emulsifier, KMnO4/oleic acid = 4/1 (mol/mol) at 40 °C for 30 min; oleic acid was cleaved into about 93 mol% pelargonic acid and 86 mol% azelaic acid. These fatty acids were further decarboxylated to yield 98.2 mol% n-octane and 73.1 mol% n-heptane, respectively, under the conditions of 300 °C/10 MPa and 300 °C/5 MPa (N2 pressure) with 6 mol% Pd/C for 23 h. The obtained results illustrates a potential of plant oil conversion to renewable gasoline.

This research evaluates the effect of biogas composition on the performance of a spark-ignition gas engine power generation system. Two types of biogas were used: low-temperature biogas (LTG), produced from wood or bamboo chips; and high-temperature biogas (HTG), produced from wood chips. Both biogases have lower heating values than natural gas; and both biogases contain H2, CH4, CO2, CO, O2 and N2. A single cylinder, 4-stroke, 163 cc, Honda GE160V spark ignition gas engine was used. Results show that the maximum brake thermal efficiency was approximately 30% for LTG and HTG. Maximum brake thermal efficiency occured for H2 concentrations close to 5% for HTG and 12% for LTG. Even though the maximum brake thermal efficiency is similar for both biogases, the H2 concentration at which the peak occurred is different due to the effect of the other compornents.
