    In this paper, cutting mechanisms of Al-Si casting alloys, AC2BF, AC2BT6, AC3AF, AC4AT6 and AC4BF in JIS, were studied by use of the quikstop device for metal cutting. The results obtained were as follows:
    (1) A plastic flow of as-cast AC3A and AC4AF was relatively large and large cutting force was required. Consequently, local dissoluble pieces of built-up edges sticked to the machined surface in a scalelike manner.
    (2) Since the matrix of AC2B and AC4B was strong due to the presence of Cu, a plastic flow of these material was limited. Thus, even if the built-up edges were formed, their sizes were small.
    (3) In the T-6 treated materials thinner chips were formed and built-up edges became smaller than in the F-materials. Thus, the machined surface of the heat treated materials were glossy and clear. However, larger cutting forces were required due to the higher mechnical strength.

    To study effects of the matrix-oxide film interaction, the film thickness and the surface structure of the oxide films on the contact potential of the anodic oxide films of aluminum, various anodic oxide films with thickness up to 500Å were utilized. The followings were found:
    (1) The contact potential difference changed considerably as the film thickness varied between 100Å and 200Å, where the film structure changed from the barrier type to the porous type.
    (2) The contact potential difference depended on anodic treatment.
    (3) The films produced by the boric acid treatment, the higher temperature oxidation and the sealed heat treatment showed the similar potential.
    (4) The differnce among the contact potentials of the various treatments was reduced by the sealing treatment.
    (5) The larger the pit size, the effect of the sealing treatment became greater.

    Upon noting the importance of the casting condition on the aging of Al-Zn-Mg cast alloys, the present study was conducted to see the effect of the cooling rate during casting on the aging characteristics. The results obtained are as follows:
    (1) The aging characteristic depended strongly on the cooling rate during solidification; age hardenabilty decreased either when the cooling rate was high or when it was low.
    (2) The cooling rate after solidification had smaller effect than that during solidification.
    (3) Introduction of vibration during solidification was effective to prevent decrease of age hardenability when the alloys were rapidly solidified.

    Tensile and hardness tests were performed on the eutectoid Al-Zn alloy between -196°C and room temperature and fractured surface observation was made.
    As generally known, the higher strain rate and the lower testing temperature resulted in the larger yield stress, 0.2% proof stress and ultimate tensile strength. The stress-strain curves, the fractured surface appearance, the ductility and the temperature dependence of the hardness showed the occurrence of the ductile-brittle transition between -80°C and -40°C. The transition temperature was defined more adequately by the intersection point of σm-T and σF-T curves than by that of σy-T and σF3-T curves.The fractography revealed that the fracture surface consisted of the quasi-leavage pattern at -196°C and of the dimple pattern at -80°C The mean diameter of the dimples was of the same order as the grain size.

    The strain rate and temperature dependences of the low stress of the superplastic Al-Zn alloy were studied by conducting tensile tests between -80°C and 30°C. Microstructures before and after deformation were also examined. The principal results obtained are as follows:
    (1) The linear relationships of logσy-logε., logσO2-logε, logσm-logε and logσ6.0-logε were valid not only at high temperatures but at low temperatures.
    (2) The strain rate sensitivity exponents, m, determined from the logσ-logε curves, were 0.23, 0.17 and 0.12 at, 30°C, 0°C and -20°C, respectively. However, the m-values, obtained by the Backofen method, depended on the strain rate. It was suggested that this was due to structural changes during deformation.
    (3) The strain rate showed the Arrhenius type temperature dependence when deformation was beyond the maximum stress in tensile tests. The activation energy was independent of the stress and equal to 0.58eV, which was smaller than that of the bulk and grain boundary self-diffusion of Al and Zn.
    (4) When deformation was carried out between -20°C and 30°C, many voids and cavities developed at grain boundaries, transverse to the tensile axis, and grew as the strain increased.
    (5) Grain-and phase-boundary sliding was predominant at 30°C. It was still observed at 0°C. Any evidence of crystallographic slip inside grains were not detected at these temperatures.
