    Influence of pre-aging at from 20°V to 90°V on age hardening of an Al-1.6%Mg2Si alloy at 165°C was studied after solution treatment at 580°C. When the maximum hardness, attained at the 165°V aging, was plotted against the pre-aging time at 20-90°V, the concave curves were obtained. This indicates that the largest retardation effect is exhibited by the pre-aging at a certain pre-aging period. From the comparison of the experimental results obtained in the previous report, where the dissolving rate of aged Al-1.6%Mg2Si alloys had been studied, it was found that the pre-aging time to produce the largest retardation effect was in agreement with that to produce the minimum dissolving rate.

    The fracture characteristics of 5083-0 products and of 5183 welds, in which crack-like flaws and welding residual stress were present, were studied at room and low temperatures. From the experimental results, the following conclusions were obtained:
    1) Both of notched base metal and notched welded joints showed ductile fracture at room and low temperatures. The fracture stress or the maximum stress was nearly equal in the both cases and above the 0.2% proof stress at the same temperature.
    2) The fracture stress of the deep notch test specimen with 400mm width was approximately equal to that of an infinite plate with a notch, like actual structure.
    3) When the plate thickness was between 25mm and 80mm, the fracture stress of the notched plate was hardly affected by the plate thickness.
    4) The laminar appearance can be observed only at the low temperature in the notched base metal, when the stress level was above the 0.2% proof stress.
    5) The welding esidual stress hardly affected the fracture stress of notched plate.

    The optimum condition to obtain the good surface finish of the reamed holes with accuracy was investigated in an aluminum cast alloy, AC8B. The results obtained are as follows:
    (1) The curve of torque vs cutting speed consisted of two parts, a constant torque region and a region, where torque increases acceleratedly with an increase of cutting speed.
    (2) Specific cutting resistance increased rapidly as the reaming depth increased. This is one of the characteristics in the cutting mechanism of "light cutting".
    (3) The accuracy of the reamed holes or the surface roughness linearly depended on the cutting speed. This result suggests that there is a certain relation between the cutting speed and the growth of built-up edges.
    (4) The optimum reaming condition was attained when the effective reaming depth and the cutting speed were, respectively, below 0.4mm and about 20m/min in the case of the cast alloy, AC8B.

    The forced, mist, and conventional lubricant supply methods were applied to a drill with an oil supply hole and a pointed chisel edges. The effect of the above lubricating methods on the hole accuracy was examined in terms of the hole oversize, the surface roughness and the height of burr. Although a soft alloy did not discriminate the lubricating methods, the forced lubrication was most efficient in the drilling of a hard alloy. When the drilling was performed under the severe condition, the effect of the forced lubrication was prominent. It was found that the hole accuracy was improved irrespective of the lubricating method, if the outer corner of the drill lip with a large relief angle was rounded to an adequate degree.

    It has been known that a small addition of Cd, Sn, or In to an Al-Cu alloy accelerates artificial aging and raises peak hardness. In Al-Cu-Sn alloys, the present authors found that the acceleration of age-hardening was due to the formation of the Sn rich phase which would act as nucleation sites for θ' precipitates. The present study was conducted to examine whether the similar mechanism was operative in Al-Cu-Cd alloys. Al-3wt%Cu and Al-4wt%Cu alloys with various amounts of Cd (0 to 0.4wt%) were prepared. Aging phenomena of these alloys were examined by hardness, calorimetric and electrical resistivity measurements as well as transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained are as follows:
    1) Although the Cd addition decreased the solubility of Cu in the α phase, the aging rate and the age hardenability increased as the amount of Cd in the α phase at the solution temperature increased.
    2) Indication of the various measurements was compared well with the aged structures. The θ' precipitates were finer and more densely distributed as the amount of Cd increased.
    3) A small dark spot, which was not observed in the binary Al-Cu alloy, was found to exist at a corner of a θ' precipitate in the Al-Cu-Cd alloys. The number of the dark spots and that of the θ' precipitate increased with an increase of the Cd content.
    4) From the above observations, it was considered that the aging acceleration in the Al-Cu-Cd alloys was caused by the formation of Cd rich phases which aided the nucleation of the θ' precipitates by acting as nucleation sites in the same way as in the Al-Cu-Sn alloys.
    5) Aging in the Al-Cu-Cd alloys occured in a slightly slower rate than in the Al-Cu-Sn alloys. Transmission microscopy showed that the distribution of the θ' precipitates was coarser and many Cd rich phases existed freely from the θ' precipitates in the Al-Cu-Cd alloys. The latter was not observed in the Al-Cu-Sn alloys. These facts suggest that the precipitation of the Cu rich phases occurs more rapidly than that of the Cd rich phases in the early stage of aging.
